I think June 1967 specifically was the turning point. I agree that before that most diaspora Jews (in the US at least) didn't think much about Israel at all (pro or con) beyond dropping coins in a JNF box.

... and getting anything shipped here is more challenging and more expensive, so you learn to rely on what you can get on island. If you get used to that and embrace the culture and people then it's a lovely place.
My wife is retired and I'm a pianist/songwriter. We love it here, and realize that we have economic advantages that lots of people on island don't. The cost of living is similar but life on island is harder in other ways: the power goes out occasionally, utilities are much more expensive
We just moved to St. Croix from DC in December. Have any questions?
I love this (and even wrote a song on the subject "We hate the same way" youtube.com/shorts/pITPK...)
#TunesOnTuesday shares a song for the end of #Passover. "Plague" transforms the story of the Ten Plagues into a bluesy breakup song. ohljazz.com/2026/04/07/t...

Carrying on the tradition of the Passover pilgrimage, I see. We had Russ & Daughters ship critical seder supplies to ours in Florida
Today the Knesset passed a deeply immoral populist death sentence law. Its existence is abhorrent, and its content is discriminatory and disgusting, and even if it's struck down its passing is a shame.
I miss my grandfather. I think Israel does too.

#TunesOnTuesday shares a highlight from Aaron Myers' visit to St Croix, his interpretation of "My Funny Valentine" recalling some of our best shows at the old Black Fox Lounge in DC. Kudos to Mario Thomas for providing that critical bass riff! ohljazz.com/2026/03/24/t...
Just wanted to say thanks @audacityofdespair.bsky.social for taking the time to provide that context. I just finished rewatching The Wire, now going back to Homicide LOTS for an even earlier generation of Baltimore stories
Can't point to any reading material, but your post reminded me of this great Count Basie track "Blues in the Church" youtu.be/N17dXSx6axg?...
Thanks for sharing this! Checking out the sounds
Super bleak and super accurate
Joe Kent's resignation letter is an antisemitic tract — the ur-text of a "stabbed in the back" myth that could do enormous damage to American Jews

Stand right, walk left If you're on the escalator and not walking, you stay to the right. Simple as that. One user noted it tends to break down come June when tourists arrive — "they'd otherwise use an escalator maybe once a month" — but among locals, it's treated as something close to law.
Anyone want to translate our song "Stand Right" to French to help our friends in Montreal? Looks like DC rules apply there as well #subway #escalator #JazzSky #metro www.mtlblog.com/living-in-mo...
Love this headline from @404media.co "AI is African Intelligence"

My ongoing thesis is that a ton of people have no memory, personal or cultural, of how bad things can be in a country, because we've had such a good run post-WW2 and the Greatest Generation has mostly passed away.
“Our nation is back — bigger, better, richer and stronger than ever before,” President Trump said to start his #SOTU address.
