The constant framing of conservative and liberal viewpoints as somehow equally worthy makes me gag. To put it bluntly, if we've learned anything over the last 20 years it's that conservatives are wrong about just about everything and also inveterate liars.

Sometimes I think about how one of the reasons that Europeans decided that indigenous cultures were inferior is because they let women have too many rights and didn't beat their children enough

The social ideology of the motorcar - Uneven Earth by André Gorz The worst thing about cars is that they are like castles or villas by the sea: luxury goods invented for the exclusive pleasure of a very rich minority, and which in conception and natur...

“Since cars have killed the city, we need faster cars to escape on superhighways to suburbs that are even farther away. What an impeccable circular argument: give us more cars so that we can escape the destruction caused by cars.”

Written in 1973, when the destruction was just beginning.

The Next Coup Attempt And How to Stop It

We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in US history. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator.

The statistical probability regurgitron is not a tool that will help you learn to think, write, come up with ideas, or clearly identify what YOU find interesting, useful, or worth researching more deeply. It is a ball and chain preventing you from learning how to do any of these things. Sorry!

kind of amazing that everything trump does can be understood through the lens of narcissism and it's related needs (e.g., self aggrandizement, revenge, domination, grievance validation). i don't think any character has been so one-dimensional, not even wile e coyote or scrooge mcduck

If you're not familiar, the format for a "truth sandwich" is:

* start with a true statement

* introduce the newsworthy lie or distortion

* true statement again

The idea is that the false claim should not be the first or last impression. It's useful when you think a lie should not be ignored.

Narratively having Ever Given getting stuck in 2021 to set up Hormuz in 2026 is great foreshadowing. You want your audience to understand the basics of international shipping in a lower stakes context so you drop the real plot without a lot of saggy exposition about the minutiae of cargo logistics.

I remember thinking at the time of the first Gulf War about what a better world we could have if we invested in green energy rather than oil wars. What a freedom that would be

Imagine a world where Americans were smarter and didn’t applaud when reactionary idiot Ronald Reagan made a show out of removing the solar panels Jimmy Carter had installed on the White House. We wouldn’t now have to worry about affording to fill gas tanks next month.

My thread was written on the assumptions that supply will continue to be significantly restricted and energy prices will continue to go up accordingly, which is the most likely scenario as things now stand.

However, there are always the possibilities of positive disruptions and unknown variables.

Human beings can know they’re being tricked, consciously try to not be tricked, and still, to some extent, fall for the trick. Good analogy.

One could argue that the death of well-written sitcoms and dramas, and the rise of reality TV, brought us to this point.

And ultimately, that all came down to TV that was cheap to produce but high on returns.

We literally lost more carefully thought-out plot lines and cultural models.

I never thought I’d see the day.

Americans being told by the rest of the world to fight for our own democracy.

We should never have gotten here.

Keep resisting. ✊🏽

Best bet is to presume anyone calling for us to just move on from the Epstein files absolutely knows why they are important and they want that truth suppressed.

It really pays to remind ourselves frequently that this whole immigration "crisis" is made up out of whole cloth. There was no emergency, danger or problem, only a demagogue stirring up racist grievances for political advantage.

Or how about this headline — “American citizen arrested without cause after exercising his Constitutional rights.” Very important that government propaganda not become the default framing.

Darkness Descends in Minneapolis It’s night in America, and the darkness is spreading quickly.

ICE have been goading the people of Minnesota with increasing acts of lawlessness. It is about giving Trump the excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act conferring total state power.
My thoughts on how Minnesota can respond with creative & determined resistance.

So, hypothetically, if you were to make a solo-cup-in-chain-link-fence message over an overpass, you’d be putting in the letters backwards. And, again hypothetically, you might want a template for that.

Hypothetically.

A quarter of a million Americans died in the European Theater in WWII, helping to establish the foundation for this alliance. Trump has damaged it irreparably in less than a year. The portion of the US electorate who put him back into office is also to blame.

Hegemonic suicide.

Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping. Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

Anything less than abolishing ICE is unacceptable. I don't want to hear people talk about training these motherfuckers or throwing more money at them. The entire institution needs to be permanently disbanded. Do not let politicians sell you on anything less.
