I think we’ve begun to see this
terminal crisis of reproduction in scholarship, too: there’s a widening gulf between the type of work that can be done by appropriately resourced scholars w/ levels of support that were general 20 yrs ago, but which are now confined to a tiny sliver of elite schools

Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.
At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.
Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

The ICE Detention Reengineering Initiative ($38 billion to convert commercial warehouses into a network of massive detention centers) is not being built primarily by GEO Group and CoreCivic. ICE is turning to a crop of relatively untested contractors. A look at who. 🧵

New paper out in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: we apply linguistic tools to sperm whale vowels.
The result: sperm whale vowels do not just look like human vowels. They also behave like them.
We found several parallels. Like in Latin, whales have short and long vowels.

I often listen to Soulection in the shower and just realized I’ve developed a Pavlovian response where I feel compelled to listen to MUTT by Leon Thomas as soon as the shower head is on.
Need to see them at the Ladds 500 next week.
I Work Very Hard, And I Would Like To Try Cake By A Horse Hello. I am a horse. I work very hard at my job of being a horse. When humans say move the heavy thing, I move the heavy thing. When humans sit on top of me and pull on my head, I carry them where they want to go. The main food the humans give me is hay and oats. But I am thinking it would be nice to have a different food. I am thinking I would like to try cake. Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape. Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy. Please understand: I do not get money for doing work. I do not get to go inside the house. All I am either doing my horse job or standing in my pen or eating food off the floor. I always do these things. But I have never once gotten cake and I would like it very much. I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children. I am more helpful to the farm. Children do not move the heavy things like me or let anyone ride on them. And yet they get cake. Maybe the humans will realize this. Maybe they will say, "You know who deserves cake? That horse. That horse whose back we are always on." Every day I dream about what it will be like if I get to eat cake. Here is what will happen. First, I will walk to the cake and putt my nose at it like hrrfff to make and stomping my hooves to make sure it is not a snake. Then I will trot in a circle to show that I am a horse and I am large. After that, I will nuzzle the cake to …
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me.
It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."
Absolutely does not need to be this way and hate that it is

Seven foreign doctors and aid workers who volunteered in Gaza described a perverse situation in which Israel permits doctors into Gaza but not medical equipment—even months into a supposed ceasefire—prompting several to smuggle medical supplies in, even as they treat new casualties of war.
NEW: Last October, Border Patrol agents gassed Chicagoans after agents caused a major car crash on the southeast side.
I analyzed body cam videos that show agents Benito Nunez, Oscar Guillen, and Carlos Chavira ignored orders to end the pursuit—moments before they blew a tire and crashed.

yeah so I don’t think the choice we’re being offered is “pay the police to play Candy Crush or pay them to lock up your neighbors” it’s that this even *being a job* is a choice and we can unmake it at any time
Travelers at PDX said there is no need for ICE agents to come and think it would do more harm than good.
“Yeah, that don’t gotta happen. No, cause they’re not qualified to do the job,” one traveler said.
“What’s the point,” another said.

In Terminal 1, agents stood in pairs at each passenger exit. They appeared to be unoccupied, standing and chatting as passengers walked by them. Most wore masks. All wore bulletproof tactical vests.
“It’s pointless. It’s just to cause fear and threat to people.”
The little details I noticed this time are Sammie mentioning he wants to drive the car,, and the steam locomotive being a Chicago Pullman
Most cry-making portions are still the ancestral time is a circle scene and the end with Annie and Buddy Guy
