If I was still teaching I would really want to do a seminar on 90s theory: Butler, Massunmi, Bhabha, Sedgwick, the big red CRT reader, maybe some newis-ly translated Deleuze and Derrida...

An opportune time to remind yall media and journalism scholars that there isn’t much scholarship out there on The Onion and I would love a pitch for a monograph or edited collection on the subject…

This is manifestly about destroying public higher education and not about content. Plato’s Symposium does have a ‘gender ideology’ and it’s “Boys, let’s kick the women out so we can have SERIOUS conversation”

“occultism & escoterism…serves the same role in Dark Enlightenment thought as affect serves in Downing’s book: it is the undisciplined other that evokes the sublime against which reason can demonstrate its disciplining or “tempering” force…“reason” is the status and affect of disciplined mastery.”

Just a philosopher, but I’m pretty sure the point of running and holding marathons is not sheer speed (we have cars and trains for that), but the test of human things like persistence, endurance, training, etc…the human meaning of it all.

I mean the real reason continental philosophy only really survived in Catholic schools was bc of McCarthyism and nobody could accuse Catholics of being communist atheists

Independent bookstores make quiet comeback as big chains dominate retail About 422 indie bookshops opened in 2025, up 31%, defying predictions of retail consolidation

(If I ever get to retire I want to open a used book & record store with like a nice little coffee counter in downtown Windsor CT)

With the big exception of ND, if you are taking a philosophy class at a Catholic school in the US it’s gonna be continental philosophy

I had the misfortune of being a sophomore at Miami U the year Will Smith dropped “Welcome to Miami.” The woman on the room next to mine played it on repeat all year.

Interesting how many of the answers to this are derogatory.

TBH the most *influential* 90s songs are prob Mariah's Fantasy & NIN's Closer

others have commented on the inclusion of crowd noise on the NIN/oize album version as uncanny, but I think it actually does a lot of heavy lifting shifting the old, deeply anti-social ME ME ME nature of the old lyrics into something very not that, highlighting collaboration & shared references
