Very excited to have this little @nightjarpress.bsky.social story out in the world nightjarpress.weebly.com/halls-of-res... — sitting alongside three other new Nightjars. Thanks @nicholasroyle.bsky.social!
Still can't believe I work at a department that can pull off Bohemian Rhapsody, as just one song of a 3 hour set last night by The Copernicats—an open jam group of 30 researchers. We had guitar, bass, keys, drums, flute, sax, cello, accordion, melodica, cowbell, tambourine, and 20 singers!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Today we launched the 3rd rendition of The Creative Collectives for Utopia zine: 𝑩𝒆𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏. Read it here: www.uu.nl/en/research/.... So proud of our master’s students for producing such a brilliant zine which shares six situations to provoke imagination of possible futures.
Thanks @bildoperationen.bsky.social for sharing this! I managed to squeeze mention of it into a post I've been working on about the growing use of AI images to imagine better futures: www.uu.nl/en/opinion/a...

This post is for anyone who uses AI text-to-image tools or is concerned by their use. It tells an unexpected tale, which led me back to the cornfields of Illinois to interview my dad about 1970s rural America...
Read the new #UtopianPulses blogpost ‘AI Images for dreaming or ghosting?’ where @jochamb.bsky.social invites us into an experiment with students, who were asked to choose an emerging technology and use AI to generate images of two possible futures in 2060. www.uu.nl/en/opinion/a...

A view towards Agricultural Hall Plain, Norwich, from the top floor of 20 Bank Plain. It is a misty morning with the sun visible through the mist. Cars are queuing to cross a junction with a Boer War memorial of a bronze angel on it.

Around 15 orange and yellow illuminated coloured acrylic "Sunrise" and "Sunset" discs in a frame, with a video of a sunset projected over them. The discs have drawings or paintings on them of things including a tree, a diagram of the earth with arrows around it, and an abstract zig-zag star pattern.

I like to say I respect despair as an emotion but not an analysis. As an analysis it assumes we know what can and can't happen, and the future is both uncertain and at least to some extent what we make of it. www.newstatesman.com/environment/...
As part of our Transformative Research PhD course last May, Aisha So wrote & illustrated a fantastic story to explore doubt and tensions in research. It won a special award for combining art and academia at EASST-4S, and is now online! Huge congratulations to Aisha!! www.uu.nl/en/news/aish...
So wonderful performing with the Copernicats yesterday, the open jam group at our institute -- 20 colleagues performed together across a spectacular two hour set! 🔥
