The only time art is made purely for the sake of art is when it’s put out into the world for free. However that doesn’t make the great works any less amazing pieces of art. Mario Galaxy was created to make money, but it’s no less a phenomenal video game for it.
I’d say the product aspect begins to diminish games as art when a game is obviously only made to syphon out as much money as possible such a yearly full priced games with microtransactions. But even the best games of all time are still products, they exist to make money

I think the big element that makes makes discussion of games as art so frustrating is people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that the majority of video games are art AND products simultaneously, and being a product doesn’t INHERENTLY diminish it as art
