WaPo is my hometown paper and this might be it for me. Sad turn that is strategically nonsensical to boot (since like you said, we already have a robust financial press).

DeepSeek did still require training data generated by the more expensive models. If DeepSeek 2 can achieve cutting-edge performance on data generated by the first DeepSeek though... 😬

Kneecapping Google Would Be Bad For Tech Competition The Department of Justice’s demand that the tech behemoth sell its Chrome search engine or Android mobile operating system comes at a critical time for the tech industry.

NEW: I know we want to see big tech punished for monopolistic misdeeds, but holding back Google’s AI plans is worse for competition in the long run. My piece today for @opinion.bsky.social :

One potential issue with that strategy though - how much longer would it take to get new-gen exclusive titles if that would require giving up the installed base of the previous home console AND the current handheld? 🤔

There will probably be some grumbling if the PS5 portable comes out close to the PS6 launch, but staying roughly a generation behind the home console is probably the only way to pull this off without a) the portable being ridiculously expensive or b) hamstringing the home console.

This could be a positive development for competition in search, but imo search itself won't really improve until someone figures out how to deal with all the SEO spam that is only going to get worse with AI. 😬

This and the Epic decision (in the context of Apple getting away with the same behavior) have been pretty baffling. I get why regulators want to rein in Google but the way they're going about it could be better, to put it mildly.

Main beneficiaries here are Microsoft and Apple, not consumers. 😬

Forcing Google to give Chrome users a choice in which search engine they use from the start seems like a more sensible solution.

The DOJ pushing Google to sell Chrome is a mistake imo. Browsers don't make money on their own, so I struggle to see how post-Google Chrome survives unless it is acquired by another large platform or starts selling user data, neither of which seem like a boon for consumer welfare.
