Yey!! ๐Ÿ˜…
My friend has a goldfish called Fishy Flaps - not much meat on that though!

Ah! Yes, scale is important! Cod? (Which is essentially a big whiting...... ๐Ÿ˜†). The diagnostic biy is a bit hidden so if not cod then ling or pollock/saithe (putting all my eggs in the Gadiformes basket!)

My 'I glance at this on the school run' answer is whiting. I'll give a 'I've checked 3 times because I dont want to say something stupid on the internet' answer later! ๐Ÿ˜…

I've been contemplating leaving archaeology in a very serious way.

26 years in and I'm all out of fight. Fight I shouldn't ever have needed.

I can't encourage anyone into our discipline in good conscience. It's a snake pit.

Maybe there's improvements. Hard won. But still. I'm broken.

Close up of a hedgehog

Close up of a hedgehog

Life is pretty challenging right now ๐Ÿ˜“
My daughter took this pic of a little friend that comes visit us around 7pm each evening. I hope it makes you smile as much as it did us.

Took these quick pics today to help someone out with an ID, so if you've ever wondered what the quadrate bone of the allis shad (Alosa alosa) looks like, wonder no more! โค๏ธ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆด

Absolutely! ๐Ÿ˜Š We're not sure she'll be able to sit them anyway. She has sensory issues around paper and sometimes can't be in the same room as paper. We have a separate room and a scribe on hand in case she can face it, so she'd not need to touch any paper ๐Ÿ’“ There's so many treats planned! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Bone with fungal etching

Bone with fungal etching

๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ’ฎ On first glance, I thought this was intricately decorated bone, but the surface pattern is almost certainly caused by fungal growth! ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ๐Ÿ„
So beautiful! โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆด

I was appointed to teach it at one point, but it was going to cost me money to do so, so I had to turn the role down ๐Ÿ˜ข

A level archaeology no longer exists ๐Ÿ˜ข But I had so much fun and this 2-year course gave me an amazing head start for my degrees in archaeology, which focussed on plants and animals โค๏ธ

Petrosal bones of domestic cattle (left) and equid (right, probably domestic horse).
As well as being species diagnostic, they are also a good element to note because of their dense bone structure that preserves genetic material well ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿงฌ

I've been told for 30+yrs that I'm "too soft" I need to "toughen up" ๐Ÿ™„

I don't need to "grow thicker skin". People need to stop being bullies. Stop gate keeping. Stop abusing their positions.

I'm done changing so that ppl can continue to think their shit behaviour is ok.

Beautiful example of oak (Quercus) wood charcoal (x40 magnification). Rocking the ring-porous.
You can compare with English oak wood (Quercus robur) here:

Right occipital condyle of a horse of course! ๐Ÿ’€๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฆด

(well, equid, but that doesn't rhyme. It's most likely a horse, but donkey or mule can't be ruled out!)

The only Equid bone for this context!
