I believe that in order to take some small step forward, the word “bird” should be replaced with “saur” in all common names. Mockingsaur. Secretarysaur. Red-winged blacksaur.

I think eleodes are too large (10-50mm)? Crypticus quisquilius are typically 4.5-7 mm and are commonly found in dry, sandy areas.
Crypticus quisquilius?
- When in doubt, just round the number down.
- If you want to get away with this bluff, you’d better come up with a damn good story.
- Tread carefully. Traps are everywhere.
I went with a guide and had a great experience, two years ago (pretty good gift shop, too). Maybe see if there are local guides available for a small group?

Which just led me to realize why Fido was once such a popular dog name. It sounds cheesy to us now, but on reflection it’s actually so lovely. On a similar note, one of our dogs has the classic dog name “Rufus” because he has red hair :)
I was just thinking what a perfect dog name ❤️
Absolutely agree. I saw Enrigue last week at Third Place Books in Seattle and he talked about that specifically. In some uses, the technique could be seen as a bit precious, but in this case it’s to emphasize that point. This is relatively recent history. And I think it works brilliantly.
Oh, you’re in for a treat! Loved that one.
Leave me and my TBR pile out of this!

Just finished the absolutely magnificent and heartbreaking No Friend to This House by @nataliehaynes.bsky.social
Could not recommend this highly enough (especially the audiobook, narrated to perfection by the author).
This really does sound like an “everybody wins” situation.
