Kevin Warsh just lost me. He argues he's going to be an independent Fed Chair, but refuses to acknowledge that Trump lost the 2020 election. If you can't state simple facts when you're in the political spotlight, you aren't independent. You're a coward.

The SPLC has long monitored and exposed white nationalist and Christian nationalist hate groups, so it makes sense that an administration staffed by many people sympathetic to one or both of those movements would use the DOJ to go after them.
"Raise taxes on wealthy older adults" is terrible politics but good policy. Property tax exemptions for older homeowners stem from good intentions but are actually regressive, because they reduce the availability of homes for younger, less wealthy renters.

My post wasn't really about the specifics of the particular incident (to be clear: fuck Putin), just that the scale of things like wars feels just huge compared to the small actions we can take as individuals
a good 75% of the U.S. press operates either in blind fealty or timid normalization of him, yet he's such a narcissistic black hole it's just never enough
Recently started biking for real, and holy f-ck - the cars. I swear to absolute fucking God. The cars man. I've never in my 30+ year life seen so many stupid fucking idiots in traffic. Blind motherfuckers. They are making my blood boil. Today someone decided it was a great time to make a U-turn in the middle of the street. I kept distance but the car was jerking and was indecisive and just stopped forcing me to go right on the curb making me fall head over the handle bar and crash. Not a care in the world the driver just looked at me and drove off. Never in my life have I seen so many stupid people that can't drive. And I've had a drivers license for over 20 years soon.
A common thread among newer cyclists is realizing just how awful drivers are. There are things you simply don't notice — behavior that has been normalized — when you mostly drive. Biking, walking, or rolling through the world changes that.
"Police say a man has been arrested after a gun he was holding killed..."
thats what this sounds like. wtf
Be warned: the picture in the post below contains a grisly scene of a four-story apartment building between two houses. Will the horrors never cease? Surely images like this should be flagged as sensitive content!
Something something not everyone can ride a bike in LA because it doesn't have nice weather like Spokane
Finland’s “Housing First”: Instead of requiring ppl to solve their problems before getting housing, it provides permanent housing 1st w/out preconditions.

New study: Families who leave California are much more likely to have financial problems than those who stay. But seven years later, those who leave are much more likely to be homeowners than those who stay. Revive the California Dream: build more housing!

If you want to end the California housing crisis, don't just post about it: come to YIMBY Lobby Day on May 19 in Sacramento. We will schedule you for a meeting with your representatives, connect you with neighbors, and coach you on how to advocate effectively!

A few years back my main Linux computer had some HW failure and I needed something for web/email, so I got a Chromebook from Costco. I'm still using it; it's a surprisingly decent computer for what I paid for it
Next up: level 6!
Six-plexes like the Spokane Six
Six stories with single stairs
Dreaming aside, when I talk with others at @yimbyaction.bsky.social I think Bend definitely punches above its weight for what we've done so far. Thank you!
Things Bend has done/is doing I think every city should do, urbanist edition:
Upzone to quadplexes (at least) everywhere
Plan key biking and walking routes and build them out
Get rid of parking mandates
Price the curb wherever data says it makes sense
Work harder on transit (we're gonna!)
Why not start a neighborhood watch system and have a citizens patrol linked to the police. Ticketing or requiring the kids to attend a safety class or something. Something is going to happen eventually.
Nextdoor dot com is an inexhaustible source of amazing content.
You'll never guess what menace this person wants to form a neighborhood patrol to combat 😂
And it lowers the demand for oil, which remains a very problematic source of energy
Gov. Tina Kotek is fighting back against Donald Trump and taking action to protect Oregon’s immigrant communities 💪
I have days where I'm like "hey, I helped contribute a bit less CO2 by riding my bike!" and then I look at the news and it's stuff like this. I'm guessing it would take a lot of bike rides to offset that 😩
And even there, "farmers" is doing a lot of work. Where I live, because of weird water rights, a lot of hobby farms get too much water - if they don't use it, they lose it. Then there's tons of waste, like this pipe they only pulled up in 2019.

1-5? 20% drop at a time when there was significant inflation. That's fantastic news for a lot of renters!
Zoning/permitting/building code reform is even more important if you can't sprawl - like San Francisco
These are the types of raised/tabled crossings that I want US cities to start building. They're continuous for people walking and biking instead of continuous for drivers (even if they're raised up).
The fact that Karen Bass dropped her “climate plan” for Los Angeles days before she reaffirmed her commitment to killing local transit oriented development is a sick joke.

Trump's Housing department is trying to pass a rule that would break up immigrant families and leave tens of thousands unhoused. I won't stand for it.
Picture of street filled with people when cars are prohibited, with a prominent sign saying “road closed.” Via Urban Truth Collecrive (Also, it’s a street, not a road)
How come they keep spelling “open” wrong?
Does that street look closed to you? Only if you’re a car… and presumably that’s the real problem. #UrbanTruth
