The Mandelson affair leaves civil service in grave peril Whitehall needs reform but Starmer’s careless attitude to its independence plays into the hands of potential wreckers

Not to absolve Keir Starmer, but I think this is another example of Long Johnson. The sacking of civil servants for political reasons started then, & broke a consensus, which makes it much more tempting now. As DF says, paves the way for Reform to finish the job.

Trump extends US-Iran ceasefire indefinitely at request of Pakistan US president says on Truth Social attacks are on hold until Iran submits proposal and talks reach end

It's great news but also funny as Trump has caved in again. Someone somewhere has the world's better interests at heart.

Starmer made a mistake over Mandelson. He wasn't (perhaps) officially told about the failed vetting but would have been aware of Mandelson's past.
Unlike the Tories whose governments were rotten with lies, deceit and (PPE) scandals that cost lives, this issue is not that, so can we please move on.

“Palantir’s manifesto, which embraces AI state surveillance of citizens along with national service in the USA, is either a parody of a RoboCop film, or a disturbing narcissistic rant from an arrogant organisation,” said Martin Wrigley, a Lib Dem MP & member of the HofC science & technology SC

Instead of worrying about Starmer I’m looking at Polanski, Badenoch, Davey & Farage & worrying about them.

Starmer is head & shoulders above them.

All parties, including Labour, would do well to get their houses in order before 2028/29.

Decide who you are, eject the flotsam

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet.
This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

Trump’s presidency is what evil looks like: absurd, frightening, cruel | Nesrine Malik Commentators have said that the US president’s clownishness and lack of ideology somehow make him less dangerous. They’re wrong, says Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik

The fact America has unleashed this truly unhinged man on the world must be a reflection of their failed society. The fact that no one is stopping him shows that this evil is not confined to this one man.

It's beyond irony: the liar in chief of Deform UK will say absolutely anything to get votes while it's popularity plummets
Never forget who Farage is.

You know what really pisses me off? People having a dig at Starmer who are clearly completely unaware of what stuff Labour are doing and oblivious to how bad their alternatives would be.
I'm not a Starmer fan. There is much that he could do better. And global circumstances are against him.

Oh give over. As if any of you are any better. Stop this stupid witch hunt & get on with running the country insteas of playing 'you're out' in the parliamentary play ground.

Ex-Tory and Labour councillor Richard Bingley joins Reform for May elections The much-travelled politician, who has also been a member of Ukip, will stand for election to Thurrock council

Behold the curious tale of the once-Tory leader of Plymouth council leader, who resigned after 100+ city centre trees were cut down, who was formerly a Tory, then Labour, then Ukip and then Tory again - and is now standing in May for Reform.

This, of course, is why Farage and all the others in the UK who are paid by the fossil fuel industry are so against the development of the national renewable energy grid.

No obscene profits for energy companies, no money for their shills.

That doesn't mean it was HIS plan. The previous gov't negotiated something in good faith with other parties & Starmer could presumably not see a good reason to undo those negotiations. To 'blame' Starmer is disingenuous. I suggest you may be lacking the maturity required to understand the nuance.

I don't read any allegation that the UK gov't is involved.

Very disingenuous of you to call it 'his plan'. It never was, it was the previous disastrous Tory gov't's plan. Please be accurate.

a group of cartoon characters are standing next to each other and one of them is saying go forth and spread the word ALT: a group of cartoon characters are standing next to each other and one of them is saying go forth and spread the word

Remember that Nigel Farage is Donald Trump's biggest supporter.

Remember that Nigel campaigned for Trump and even wants to mimic all his policies.

This is the sort of insanity Reform want to bring to the United Kingdom.

Ten years after Brexit, this is the UK: a divided nation frozen in time | Aditya Chakrabortty Tribalism has not faded over the past decade. Instead, new research reveals our politics has become ever-more polarised and fractious, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty

“an obsession of one small fraction of the Westminster elite was made a public concern, given months of airtime and front pages”
Thanks to David Cameron capitulating to his backbenchers, we have the disaster that is Brexit.
