Ahhhhh there is one in Richmond but I think it's sold out now!!!
It is definitely a very protestant way to answer it.
I do somewhat sympathize with his perspective growing up with parents and teachers that measured creativity as a tangible skill where someone is better than another. It’s a way of rationalizing it under that kind of environment.
it is a genuine miracle the crt we had growing up is still functional and clean
that thick ass glass is certainly much more childproof than TVs from the last couple decades
I think my perspective is because of mainly playing pure solo with occasional 3 stacking.
Yeah, in 3 stack lobbies the PvP is definitely more of a focus.
(it’s also real annoying how it seemed like this is how the game originally was until the game director of Valorant rebooted everything :/)
As fun as the game is, I really do wish it was given a structure more like a roguelike Path of Exile or Borderlands where its solo + optional friends than the extraction shooter angle.
I get nothing out of the PvP aspect, and it could probably just be replaced with Dark Souls style invasions.
Oooh I see what you mean, like 3 random players shouldn’t queue into games with pre-made parties.
Idk if any game has properly ever solved that issue. When I played Dota I only played with a group of 3-5 friend specifically to avoid this problem 😭
Image of Marathon’s queue menu with the “Solo” toggle hovered. The tooltip says “Disabling Crew Fill when solo means your crew will not be filled with matchmade players and you will only encounter other solo Runner crews. Going solo is a more challenging experience.”
Says so right in the game lmao
Solo matchmakes you with only Solo players unless you play Rook tho
they should do houston or la just so you can ride all the 20 lane freeways like a roller coaster
it made me tear up hearing the regular version over the first movie’s credits since it was one of its only moments of genuine appreciation for the games and now they’re retroactively ruining that 😭
oh yeah lmao
Titanfall 2 is like a poster child for the type of shooter that needs matchmaking
I genuinely wonder if you can even make a PvP game work long term without SBMM.
TF2 is maybe the one I’ve seen pull it off best, but even there the design has its skill gap breaking point.
Idk I guess in some level Dota is similar.
But I think what works about those games is them being more about positioning like traditional sports and the readability of the map allowing you to feel and appreciate the current state of the game without explicitly knowing as many mechanics.
Even the most basic thing like the Pokemon type chart wasn’t intended to be esports readable. It’s a fun tip and trick thing for kids to share and get excited about
That system, used competitively, is a mess because you need to memorize 324 interactions that are usually intuitive, but sometimes not
To me I’ve realized it’s similar to Smash where mechanics made to add extra sauce and variety to a kids game are being stretched and extrapolated far past their intended legibility just because people love those games so much.
It’s a mixed bag because there’s so many elements of what made the series fucking awesome alongside so much pandering.
The metalcore and kaiju monsters can absolutely stay, but the overly dower tone/character writing and the characters referring to past games so explicitly feels wrong.
but then you have all the communities of these games calling them a waste of time if they don’t last 10+ years.
idk the arms race that’s built up around these kinds of games is just exhausting.
But idk, I think the reason this whole design philosophy feels very draining is because it’s developers essentially trying to fight entropy.
It’s trying to extend the life of a single game as long as possible to lower how often they make new games.
The interesting thing is that I think many found that the peak of most of the BR games was early on before those deathmatch modes were added.
I wonder if Bungie deliberately chose Marathon to be an extraction shooter to slow down how fast players can “solve” the game like in a WoW or Destiny.
it's insane to me loading up my old nexus 5 and seeing how much nicer android 6 was compared to the complete mess that it is now
I mean is it really DLSS5 marking the shift though?
DLSS from the beginning has had this issue. It’s just that it was trained for recreating a game at high resolution instead of pictures of real life or whatever.
This is the same issue people have with TAA.
It's not an optional feature anymore because artists are relying on TAA to anti-alias their materials. Even if you hate how blurry TAA makes a game look you're forced to use it because modern games look like a shimmery mess without it.
Given time if a developer relies on this technology to craft the visual look of a game then you *can't* cleanly disable it.
It's like if a song had drums you hated the sound of so you somehow disabled them. That won't fix the issue, the song needs to be remade with better drums.
Honestly, the more I think about it, Marathon in general is basically fully realizing the potential Borderlands 1 held but Gearbox misinterpreted and flanderized in the future sequels.
As soon as Borderlands started making CEO characters that represent the corporations it made the world feel so much smaller.
Bungie is absolutely going about this the right way.
When 2kilksphilip talked to the engineers last year they seemed chronically aware of all the shit people hate about DLSS and even called generated frames “fake frames”
I have to imagine they’re probably pissed with how marketing framed DLSS 5
youtu.be/ykwPksh-AXc?...
it’s literally wasting all that pathtracing work by inventing light sources that aren’t even in the scene 😭
