A few hundred people on stage. 12 movements. 168 pages. The piece of my life so far.
I’m grateful — and very excited — to share this live recording from Dresdner Musikfestspiele 2023. I’d be so grateful if you’d give it a listen.

“On A Clear Day”, for cello, choirs, and large orchestra, is out today on Deutsche Grammophon/Avi-Music!
It’s always been hard to categorize: part concerto, part oratorio, part orchestral and choral virtuosity. Part panic, part plea, part prayer.
In anticipation of TOMORROW’s release of “On a Clear Day” on #DeutscheGrammophon, here are a few rehearsal memories with #JanVogler, #KentNagano, #PhilharmonischesStaatsorcheste Hamburg and the choirs in Hamburg and at #CarnegieHall!
Being here and getting to know Thailand’s composers was a true pleasure.
Also wonderful to see Piyawat Louilarpprasert, Mahidol University College of Music’s new dean and fellow Cornellian and hatch some exciting plans for the future. Until next time Thailand!
It was an honor to share the stage and program with Narong Prangcharoen, Kee Yong Chong and Elson Kwong and their fabulous music for orchestra. This is the 20th year of the festival - a milestone for tireless director, founder and EXQUISITE host Narong.
What a delicious week at the Thailand International Composition Festival working with and hearing music from composers from many Asian counties, along with a fantastic performance of “Melt” by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Wilson Ng!

Something enormous this way comes: my BIG SONG from 2023, "On a Clear Day", is being released on August 22 on Deutsche Grammophon/Avi-Music! Check out the 10th movement, written as a lullaby to my 4-month old daughter, available as a little taste on Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming apps!
I also got a chance to make it to the Oregon Coast and soak up the Pacific sun and the Northwest flora. What a pleasure to hear my friends Soovin, Paul, Beth, David, Burchard and Zlatomir give an incredibly rich and satisfying Brahms Bb major Sextet to close the concerts!

Last weekend in Portland was wonderful! “Latticework” was flying high at Chamber Music Northwest’s “Echoes of Bach” 2025 Summer Festival, with terrific performances in Beaverton and at Reed College.
Lots of wonderful Guest Composers as usual, like Trevor Weston @treston9.bsky.social, Elise Arancio, and John Corigliano and Mark Adamo, pictured, who blew our minds and warmed our hearts.
Bravo Cyrano! Bravo Luke! As always, this won’t be the last we hear from the two of you!
Throwback to earlier this month!
This year’s NYO USA Apprentice Composers had fantastic readings of fantastic pieces, thanks to James Ross, José-Luis Novo and the always-stellar and up-for-anything orchestra!
Leila Josefowicz and Paul Watkins are some pretty amazing travel companions—on to Portland for Chamber Music Northwest next week!

Loving the journey—in every sense—that my duo "Latticework" is on! Tuesday at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival was amazing, sharing the program with the mighty Ravel Sonata for Violin and Piano. It’s the kind of piece where I can be humbled, amazed and embraced by what these two can do.

Always a joy to be with the amazing musicians, teachers, mentors and people who make up the NYO-USA faculty!
Absolutely thrilled to see and share this! The premiere performance in April of my Quadruple Concerto with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, maestro Fabio Luisi and the amazing artists of my woodwind dream team: David Buck, Erin Hannigan, Greg Raden and Ted Soluri, is now viewable and hearable!
“Latticework” now lifts off to continue its US tour! Next month in Santa Fe #SantaFeChamberMusicFestival and Oregon #ChamberMusicNW and next season in New York #ChamberMusicSocietyofLincolnCenter! The three of us will see you there!

It was a truly amazing performance, with Leila Josefowicz and Paul Watkins giving Herculean feats with (apparent!) ease in every single one of its 592 measures.
The premiere of my most ambitious chamber music to date (2 parts, 10 movements, 20+ minutes almost without pause, for 2 people) at Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival was a special one.
A true honor to join the heavenly violin soloist Nemanja Radulović on this program, Associate Conductor Moon Doh on stage to speak at Clef Notes and to see many Pittsburgh friends including dear Mary Persin.
I had a truly wonderful time with the ever-sensational Pittsburgh Symphony this past weekend, and I’m grateful to Giancarlo Guerrero for bringing Sprout to life on stage so beautifully.
My tiny ode to very big trees - the California Redwoods - makes its way to the big stage, all in the city in which I wrote it!
Excited to be back in Pittsburgh this weekend for “Sprout” - a piece I originally wrote with a virtual orchestra (remember the pandemic!?) and animation by David Murakami in mind.
But why wait until next year to apply? The phenomenal composer/musician/mentor Jörg Widmann is the juror in 2026 — apply this fall!

I’m excited to serve as the judge for the 2027 Takemitsu Prize, undoubtedly one of the best opportunities for any young orchestral composer. Finalists come from all over the world to Japan to have their works rehearsed and performed in Tokyo!
Plenty of time for that later. #process
