Jon Bois: "why watch overtime playoff hockey when you can simply snort cocaine and ride a motorcycle out of a helicopter"
It's that time of year again. (Go Habs.)
AOC talking to RFK Jr. Her facial and hand gesture has the spiritual energy of that Italian hand gesture where you pinch your fingers and wave your hand (the "ma che vuo" gesture).
how it feels to say "sprezzatura"
Everyone knows the way you change the Constitution is to have six people in robes make up a new Constitution as they go along.
The White House has "declined to disclose the total amount raised, the identities of all donors or, until recently, basic details about the building’s design. Court documents show Trump knew he was going to tear down the East Wing at least two months before doing so, but he never told the public."
Breaking MS NOW:
The Justice Department has begun withdrawing several subpoenas that had just been issued in the criminal probe of former CIA Director John Brennan — revealing the confusion and disorder within the controversial investigation.
The poll was conducted April 16-20, during which time the Strait of Hormuz was reopened by Iran, then closed again, an example of the whiplash that has characterized the conflict.
Every poll conducted in this era needs one (1) paragraph to explain the million things that happened just before, during, or immediately after fielding

"Few approve of how Donald Trump is handling the cost of living" – Overall: 33-67 – Immigration: 40-59 – Iran: 32-67 – Economy: 30-70 – Cost of living: 23(!)-76 "The nationwide poll was conducted April 16-20, 2026 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 2,596 adults. The overall margin of sampling error is +/- 3.4 percentage points."
There's no other way to say it: This AP-NORC poll is atrocious for Trump.
– Overall: 33-67
– Immigration: 40-59
– Iran: 32-67
– Economy: 30-70
– Cost of living: 23(!)-76
37% of Republicans disapprove of his handling of the economy, 47% disapprove on cost of living.

Ossoff: "You were talking earlier about Jared Kushner. The guy leading our diplomacy in the Middle East is bringing in billions from Middle Eastern princes and sheiks and going around the region asking for billions more while he conducts nuclear diplomacy on behalf of the country. It's obscene."
New AP/NORC poll: "President Donald Trump’s approval rating on the economy has slumped over the past month as the Iran war drives prices higher...with even Republicans showing less faith in his leadership."
Overall approval: 33% (-5 from March)
Approval on the economy: 30% (-8% from March)

I'll have a piece on this today. Two things to remember:
1) Rs are doing this *because* they want no oversight for ICE/CBP. They've refused all bipartisan reforms, so are going it alone w/out any reforms.
2) Opportunity cost. If we're spending $70 bn, it should go to HELPING people, not to DHS.
Doesn't look like agreeing to Trump's absurd demand for an end to edited interviews got you much, CBS. Maybe next time choose *not* to get extorted?
During Trumps first admin I interviewed Carlson and talked to him about how his rhetoric specifically hurt my life and he treated it like a big joke. Remorse that only comes when it’s convenient isn’t remorse at all.
FWIW, the Grand Unified Theory of Alan Dershowitz remains what it has always been: The man will do absolutely anything to get on the tee-vee.
Just thinking about how *even Viktor Orban* realized that acknowledging election outcomes is a good thing.
“Reagan won the Cold War” was the sequel
He's at least thinking about it if he wins in 2026. And if he does run in 2028, he has the strongest chance of competing in both the "center" and "left" aisles of the party.
Sen. Jack Reed to Warsh as he dodges questions about divesting his assets: "Excuse me. I must commend you on the way you can circularly go around questions and not answer them. It's a skill. Unfortunately it's not a good skill for the chairman of the Fed."
In case anyone's interested in the historical track record of these "meat wave" attacks, I have a recent paper on that topic (with Yuri Zhukov)
Spoiler alert: forcing your soldiers to fight isn't a war-winning move
More and more people are saying:
He did promise "maximum lethality."
“Within a week she seemed back to normal. What I didn’t know was that measles can cause long-term complications. A child can seem fine while the virus slowly replicates in her brain, poised to exact a terrible toll years later.”

In both foreign policy and economic policy, the core belief of Trumpism is that there is some button one can press to instantly and easily solve any problem, and every political leader this country has ever had was simply too cowardly to press it. That’s it.
This is insane.

I'll simply say again that for Shlaes to resurface in The Economist at this moment is an indicator of an ambient concern that Rooseveltian policies and politics are increasingly likely. The thing about the New Deal is, it was *immensely popular.* That's terrifying to certain people
