Top Ten Tuesday – April Showers – Covers with Rainbow Colors I'm linking up with Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana's blog. Today's theme, in honor of Spring, is "Spring Showers," but because I couldn't come up with enough books for that prompt, I'm putting a bit of a spin on it: …

JAPANESE GOTHIC by Kylie Lee Baker – Review The nitty-gritty: A mind-bending, bloody mystery, Japanese Gothic blends time travel and folklore into an emotional and heartbreaking story. Japanese Gothic is one of the most unique stories I’ve read in a long time, and Kylie Lee Baker has become a new favorite author after reading it. This is a multilayered story with two timelines, but here the timelines cross over via a mysterious closet.

I'm linking up with The Sunday Post over at Kimberly's blog, The Caffeinated Reviewer. Today is a beautiful sunny day, but on Monday we actually got snow! The weather continues to be very weird. At least I've been reading lots of good books!

THE VERDANT CAGE by Jess Lourey – Review The nitty-gritty: Lovers of YA dystopian stories won't want to miss this series opener, a fast-paced, action-packed tale with plenty of surprises in store. The Verdant Cage has been getting lots of great buzz, so I was eager to experience it for myself. And I really enjoyed it, especially the last quarter of the book. Yes, it’s YA and has some of the inherent issues and elements I don’t enjoy, but overall I was sucked into the story and honestly, I am chomping at the bit for the sequel.

THE TRICKY BUSINESS OF FAERIE BARGAINS by Reena McCarty – Review The nitty-gritty: A woman must return to the faerie world she was thrown out of in this fun and twisty fantasy debut. Books about faeries and the fae realm seem to be everywhere these days, so it’s nice to come across one that feels a little different. There are familiar elements in The Tricky Business of Faerie Bargains, but I also found parts of the world building to be unique as well.

WE BURNED SO BRIGHT by T.J. Klune – Review The nitty-gritty: Epic love story meets the apocalypse in T.J. Klune’s latest, a harrowing and emotional tale about self forgiveness and acceptance. If you’re looking for a short but powerful story about coming to terms with your life when the world is about to end, then you won’t want to miss We Burned So Bright. T.J. Klune has written an emotional story about a gay couple who decide to make an epic road trip to fulfill a promise before the earth is sucked into a black hole.

MORSEL by Carter Keane – Review The nitty-gritty: A promising, fast paced debut, Morsel is big on folk horror atmosphere but tried to do too much to be completely successful. Morsel is a strange little book that started out very strong, but at some point it took a weird turn and ended up in a place I wasn’t expecting. And I’m sad I didn’t enjoy it more, because I love Carter Keane’s writing, and the pacing is great.

THE CARETAKER by Marcus Kliewer – Review The nitty-gritty: Mind-bending and menacing, The Caretaker is weird psychological horror at its best. “If you are reading this, it means you have failed the first Rite.” The Caretaker is Marcus Kliewer’s second book, and it’s just as bizarre and unsettling as We Use To Live Here. This is another mind fuck of a story where the reader isn’t given much information.

THE GEOMAGICIAN by Jennifer Mandula – Review The nitty-gritty: History and magic combine in this engaging debut fantasy story. The Geomagician wasn’t quite what I expected, but I ended up enjoying so many elements, even if there were a few things that didn’t work for me. Debut author Jennifer Mandula has taken a real life figure from history—Mary Anning, an English paleontologist in the Victorian era—and built a fantasy story around her.

What’s On My Plate – April 2026 I feel like I say this every month, but April really does have a ridiculous number of new speculative fiction releases! And I have once again over extended myself by requesting way too many books. Sigh. But can you blame me? I want to read all of these! Obviously I will not be able to read them all this month, but I did want to share all the books I'm excited for.

March 2026 Reading Wrap-Up I read and reviewed eight books in March, and because a couple of them were on the chunky side, I consider this a win. Also, my ratings feel very balanced this month! My favorite book of the month is A Widow's Charm without a doubt, it was wonderful, and I will always recommend it. If you missed any of my reviews, the titles are linked below.

NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD by Luke Dumas – Review The nitty-gritty: Shocking, gross and eye-opening, Nothing Tastes As Good is both hard-hitting and wildly entertaining. “We’re all hungry, aren’t we? You’ve made us all into monsters.” I read my first Luke Dumas book a few years ago and enjoyed it (The Paleontologist), but Nothing Tastes As Good is so much better in just about every way. Dumas takes on some hefty themes—social media, the pharmaceutical industry, fat shaming and weight loss—and gives readers an outrageously horrific story that’s as entertaining as it is disturbing.

THE CELLAR BELOW THE CELLAR by Ivy Grimes – Review The nitty-gritty: A mysterious cellar is at the center of this short but impactful tale about change and acceptance. The Cellar Below the Cellar is an odd little story with a strong folktale vibe, and I enjoyed it! It’s sort of a mash-up of different genres, so it’s hard to pigeonhole it into just one. There are dystopian, horror, fairy tale and coming-of-age elements, as well as some very odd characters, all of which make up a unique tale that will resonant with readers who enjoy their stories on the weird side.

A WIDOW’S CHARM by Caitlyn Paxson – Review The nitty-gritty: Delightful and charming from start to finish, A Widow’s Charm melds magic, high stakes and relatable characters into a story that perfectly balances comedy and romance. A Widow’s Charm surprised me in so many ways, and I ended up absolutely loving it. First, I thought this was going to be a contemporary fantasy, but it’s actually set in a secondary fantasy world in a time period similar to the Middle Ages.
