Where U.S. science has been hit hardest after Trump’s first year The Trump administration has slashed the number of grants from the National Institutes of Health, with far fewer focused on women, cancer and mental health.

"Many labs are dwindling by attrition. Students or postdoctoral researchers leave, and their positions aren’t filled. Many research universities are admitting fewer PhD students, narrowing the very beginning of the pipeline of new scientists."

Faculty Defect From Texas Publics, Citing Censorship Fed up with the state’s censoring of Plato, Joan of Arc and Romeo and Juliet, humanities professors are leaving Texas public institutions in pursuit of academic freedom.

'Texas A&M philosophy professor Martin Peterson is leaving the university after administrators told him in January that he couldn’t teach Plato’s Symposium in his philosophy class; they said the ancient Greek philosopher’s work violated the system’s restrictions on gender and sexuality content.' 1/3

Those of us doing research related to women’s health have been hit particularly hard by the govt’s sabotage of the NIH. I spoke to WaPo for this piece, as painful as it was to discuss the reality my lab is facing. www.washingtonpost.com/science/2026...

New mRNA vaccine research has basically been shelved by this administration.

We know that vaccines basically eliminate cervical cancers.

The prospect of expanding this to additional cancers is incredible. Particularly the most lethal ones like pancreatic.

‘Hysteria’ or national security? IU researcher from China to be deported Youhuang Xiang broke the law by not declaring a shipment of plasmid DNA, but colleagues say the substance is harmless and important for his research.

These news stories are becoming something of a "new normal" and that, obviously, is not good. I don't know how we rebuild the reputation of American public research universities after this www.ipm.org/news/2026-04...

Roughly half of STEM PhD students in the U.S. are international students.

75% of them stay in the U.S. long term after graduating to contribute their skills to U.S. scientific research and development.

Cutting international student visas hurts U.S. science now and long into the future.
