Playing Alone Together My essay in The Soloist, plus the social dyanamics of solo RPGs.

Last week, @the-soloist.itch.io published my essay "Playing Alone Together" about my experience running solo rpgs for groups at Breakout Con. With permission, I'm reposting it in my own newsletter plus a little nugget of my own, where I give my "nutshell" take on how solo RPGs are never truly solo.

This is a great opportunity to read one of my favorite comics- it's full of heart and care and depth, and it really understands what I love so much about the character. Superman is an immigrant story, and Superman Smashes the Klan says that's a story for me. Extremely thoughtful work! Read it!

Band-Aids & Bullet Holes Design Diary: Be Vulnerable With Someone - Dice Exploder Band-Aids & Bullet Holes is my upcoming deckbuilder tabletop roleplaying game built for bloody revenge operas inside a tight-knit clique of professional assassins. Here’s a post where I take one...

This week in my Band-Aids & Bullet Holes design diary I'm talking about my favorite move in the game, "catch someone with their heart exposed," and how being vulnerable with someone in this game can literally kill you. God I love this move.

Essay: The GM Is Dead In Firebrands, The GM Is Dead.

Here is a blog post that I wrote with a friend titled "The GM is Dead."

It asks: If we can describe some GMless games as "GMful," how might we describe games like Firebrands?

The post is super short (4 min read), and I think we hit on something interesting despite the brevity.

You Will Die In This Place by Liz A nihilistic dungeon crawler about death, art and identity.

So, apparently I missed Transgender Visibility Day by a few hours, but the full PDF version of You Will Die In This Place is now avaliable. You should be able to access it for free if you previously got the development preview.

this is a one page rpg entitled regime change super soldiers. You are state-engineered super-soldiers from a morally impeccable foreign power. You have been deployed to the world’s largest rogue state, the United States of America, to perform a humanitarian extraction of the President, who must be taken alive to face criminal charges back home. Players: Create a Character. They should have a bombastic name, an absurdly strong power and an ideological justification.

Example Names: The Human Shield, Johnny Nukes, Project Necessary Evil, Marshal Democracy

Example Powers: Can punch holes into the future, can fire precision strikes that hit everything within three miles, can instantly declare anything a “military-aged male”, can reroute international supply chains instantly.

You also have three STATS:
POWER: raw force, explosions.
AUTHORITY: legality, consensus.
IMAGE: optics, media, vibes.
Assign 3,2,1 to these stats.

GM: Create the President. They are: extremely protected, constantly moving, definitely not resigning. Beyond that you can choose which real US President from the last two decades you pick. Change vibes/era of game to match. Pick which American city they start in. Performing Actions: Every action has two features: it is cool and media-worthy and it causes untold destruction. To carry out an action:

1.Stand up (optional).
2. Announce the cool and media-worthy part of your action, for example: “I surgically neutralise hostile forces with my precision strikes”
3. Secretly write down the untold destruction caused by your action and hand it to the GM. Be specific and cruel. For example: “I level a whole district of LA including six schools and a hospital.”
4. Remove one point from the relevant stat.

GM: Write down the names of locations which must be destroyed before the President can actually be captured. Keep adding decoys, obstacles and opportunities for destruction until you are satisfied that the conditions for regime change have been achieved.
