Globe showing the Atlantic Ocean with arrows depicting the AMOC circulation: warm surface currents (pink/red) flowing northward from the tropics toward the Arctic, and cold deep return currents (blue/purple) flowing southward. The background shows sea surface temperature trends, with a prominent blue cold patch, the "cold blob", south of Greenland, contrasting with warming (orange/red) across the rest of the ocean.
1/ There's a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic that shapes Europe's #climate, drives monsoons, and keeps sea levels stable along the US coast.
In the last 5 years, the scientific evidence that it could collapse has shifted dramatically.
Most people have no idea. 🧵

This article is poorly done. It uses 2 cases to justify the claim there’s a sector-wide crisis. Then it takes a bad faith actor’s (Toby Young) claim that that there are 500 such cases at face value. No critical assessment of this crisis framing at all.

Critical Atlantic current significantly more likely to collapse than thought
Scientists say finding is ‘very concerning’ as collapse would be catastrophic for Europe, Africa and the Americas
Hey @nytimes.com, @washingtonpost.com, @latimes.com, @sfchronicle.com
why is this not front page news? This is a really big deal, with devastating impacts. If you all would report on the science, it would be harder for electeds to dismiss it so recklessly.
Please step it up!

Mathias Corvinus Collegium -which Orban used to fund Christian Right across Europe - has endowment worth *1% of Hungary’s GDP*
This money has gone to Matt Goodwin, Frank Furedi, a Roger Scruton foundation run by Michael Gove + James Orr
Magyar needs 2/3rd of seats to unpick this. Be huge if he can

The Home Office' anti-immigration agenda is strangling growth across the economy. It prevents a closer relationship with Europe, deprives us of the workers we need and undermines universities.

1/2. Notice that after losing the war Trump threatens his allies rather than Russia — even though Russia quite literally helped Iran defeat the US and he knows it.

Capping interest on student loans won't help most graduates
Ministers will no doubt spin this as a major intervention to help struggling young people
I had a couple of graduates asking me whether they’d benefit from the government’s magnanimous announcement on capping student loan interest because of Iran.
Sorry to disappoint - the answer for most is no, not at all, this makes no difference whatsoever

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Putin's Puppet Project in Peril - emptywheel
JD Vance took time out of Trump's Crusades against Iran to tamper in Hungary's election not just because Viktor Orbán is the ideological figurehead of the far right, but because Hungary serves as a ke...
“This is a trans-national effort, funded by Russian oil, to replace Western liberalism with a pro-Russian ideology... Orbán is not just the puppet that gives this packaged ideology a European face... he oversees the money laundering vehicles to fund the larger network”

Because Vance is a living node in a Russia-funded propaganda machine; everyone should please notice that there is nothing American about having to fly to a foreign country to try to influence its election so that your own career can continue as planned.

This week, Brexit finally killed our family business. We cleared out our warehouse, handed back the keys, paid the final bills and said goodbye to our last employee.
What was once a thriving firm died a slow, sad death, all thanks to Farage, Johnson and the gullible idiots they conned. 1/18

Brexit remains unforgivable in the damage it’s done to our country, our democracy and to people’s lives. Ruinous stupidity, vengeful prejudice and political dishonesty. And Farage wants more of that. Threatening to tear up improvements to our Brexit deal and leave the ECHR.
Jeezus, UK. Wake TF up.

‘A national scandal’: trawlers scour seabeds of supposedly protected UK waters
‘Precious ocean life is being pushed to the brink’ say campaigners, arguing that overfished marine areas are ‘protected only on paper’
Bottom trawling harvests immense numbers of fish.
It tears up the seabed habitat the next generation of fish + shellfish need, so populations cannot recover quickly.
With cod, herring & mackerel numbers at critical lows, we need to end this destructive practice:

NASA might have been the coolest organization on planet earth — a real life/larger than life organization that the smartest people in the world respected, kids dreamed their whole life of working for, & even Hollywood couldn’t make larger than it already was.
So of course Trump ruined it in a year.
