This situation further compounds the misery of being a fixed-term/precarious academic. Why would universities hire an ECR if they can hire an established academic who has been made redundant?

British Library workers are sick of poor pay, overwork, and feeling the fallout of a cyber-attack which left them vulnerable to identity theft and blackmail. Now, they are going on strike for a fortnight.

yep! i’ve moaned about this before too!
just saw a part time curator job for 20k a year in central London. tbh it’s at the point now anytime a cultural institution advertises a role they may as well just say “those who require a salary to live need not apply”. every year it gets worse, and we’re seeing how arts and culture suffers for it!
I had a great time talking about the life and times of black rugby pioneer Roy Francis on the William Hill Sports Book podcast - watch it on YouTube here: youtu.be/zcljJVKGFK0?...
“… researchers publish too many useless papers and … we aren’t flexible enough to abandon declining subjects where little new can be learned. … [A]fter reaching a critical mass, research communities become self-perpetuating due to the emotional and financial interests of those involved.”
Historians should be very concerned about this!
hahaha yes i’m not raggin on jungle as a genre!

As Biden is swept into the dustbin, Charlotte E. Rosen wonders: what was the Resistance “Twitterstorian”?
Well-paid liberal “attack dogs” of democracy like Heather Cox Richardson proved to be all too willing to turn to Democratic Party apologia—especially on Gaza.

Labour's rivers policy is unbelievable. 1. Steve Reed, the Environment Secretary, has decided our rivers are insufficiently polluted with chicken shit, so he’s loosening the rules. Never mind that it's the primary cause of rivercide in the Welsh border region. www.theguardian.com/environment/... 🧵

David Lammy just visited Israel to meet foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar.
They discussed “Syria, Lebanon and the Iranian threat” and Lammy reportedly invited Sa’ar for an official visit to Britain.
Lammy should be investigated for complicity in war crimes.

NEW: A study by Yale University and other institutions has found that the Gaza war death toll is likely 41% HIGHER than Palestinian health officials reported.
It also found that over 59% of those killed were women, children and people over the age of 65.

Musk has incinerated the value of Twitter as a business or user experience. The reason why Zuckerberg is copying his lead is that the true value of these information systems is political.

Reflecting on how academic freedom is essential to my work. I've never worried about my job (pre/post tenure) for making comments about a large employer, gov't policy, prominent polling company, etc.
It was speech about Palestine that cost me my job. End the Palestine exception at UBC.
