I’ve been mulling this thought over but I think there’s sort of a third wave of indie RPGs outside of the established OSR / Story Game divide…games that I would say take design cues from both schools but are firmly developing their own identity and culture distinct from both.

On est d'accord, c'est parfaitement internalisé. Mais c'est aussi pour ça que c'est intéressant de le mettre en avant et d'en parler, parce que c'est comme ça qu'on progresse.

Non-RPG design that could inspire RPG design.

1. These could be NPCs, locations, magic items or powers. Presented in three-column with an image for each.

These text formats (bullets, bolding, underlining, small caps and italicization) exists for a reason. And as with all these tools, if you use them well, they will improve the text. But if you use them like shit, it will make everything worse. If you crush your thumb, it’s not the hammer’s fault.

For me, one reads well and one runs well at the table. Both are great, at different things, in different contexts and situations. You should always write good, of course. And you should always format your text to best fulfill the design goal. That is not always making it pleasant to read as prose.

It really speaks to how far TTRPGs have to grow as a medium that a game about taking care of a Tamogotchi completely imploded because it's designers couldn't fathom any gameplay other than combat.

Speaking of RPG kickstarters, this seems like a pretty big misunderstanding of how the current RPG scene works and I can't imagine it's going to be good for this game's long-term visibility when people who might be interested in giving it a try get told "okay first, you have to download the app"

I want to see that in games and I want traditional publishers to be an option so those practices become more common here.

A significant amount of work I do in publishing is to further that goal.

Additional bugbear with it all is that there are some legitimate grievances I can find value in seeing aired; but the review culture in TTRPGs feels stuck in 2007.

It is anger or it is exalting influencers in a bid to become one.
There's proper labor to be done! A better world is possible!

Someone once reviewed a work I was part of and complained about it featuring something that wasn't featured in the thing at all.

...don't got the means to the put-up or shut-up of how to fix the review ecosystem, but I've written the framework documents to do so.

It ain't hard. Its just labor.
