Finally, we compare these results to those we previously found on Instagram.
- IG featured similar use of 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 across languages.
- Twitter features significant cross-cultural variation.
These results suggest differences in platforms' homogenizing power.

We find 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 functions as a conversation-stopper.
If it is bad form to argue with another's values, then introducing values into a discussion may serve as a tool od decontestation, insulating oneself from criticism and effectively ending the conversation.
We find 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 discourse to reflect transnational norms of authenticity and autonomy:
- Everyone is entitled to their own values. Value imposition is condemned.
- One should be loyal to their values. It is better, it seems, to hold bad values authentically than profess good ones insincerely.
- In English, German, & Italian 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 primarily marks boundaries between political groups.
- In Japanese & Korean, 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 mostly expresses individual preferences and negotiates interpersonal relationships.
Across all five languages, 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 conveys a vague sense of the good yet serve clear discursive functions – anchoring personal identities and mediating relationships through boundary work.
Analyzing 15 million tweets in English, German, Italian, Japanese, and Korean between 2019-2021 and using computational and qualitative methods, we find 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 to be a keyword with varied contexts, floating meanings, and shared functions.
Social media is full of talk of values... but what do we 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 when we talk about 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠, and what do we use the term to 𝑑𝑜?
A new @icsjournal.bsky.social #OpenAccess paper from DigitalValues team+co-authors analyzes the meanings and functions of 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 on Twitter
