What was it like for a regiment on the 'deadliest day' in French military history?
Not Verdun.
Not 22nd August 14.
But 25th September 1915, where over 21,000+ French died in a few hours.
One regiment — the 315e RI — suffered the 4th highest losses.
This is their story 🧵 ↓
Alexis would be killed the next day.
Over 500 others died with him... including the man pictured
Find out more in the video, where I used letters, photographs and regimental records to reconstruct what happened to the 315e RI.

Alexis Chambron, night before:
"The artillery has been increasing, it is now so loud, it’s enough to make you deaf. I hope this time the gaps in the wire have been made and that the sacrifices made will be worth it"
"In any case, if something bad happens to me.... prepare yourself for the worst"

110 years ago, my great-grandfather sent this home.
“It’s cold. And when we are in the trenches, outside at night, it will be even worse. We leave for 8 days. On our right, at Verdun, it has been non-stop.
I’m sending you a photo 👇 it will be a memory for me after the war.

110 years ago, Émile Driant and thousands of others were killed in the opening days of Verdun.
To mark the anniversary, I’ve reworked my short film on the battle, told in 5 minutes.

Today is the 110th anniversary of the Battle of #Verdun in 1916. I took this photo one morning at Cote 304 in 2016: Ancient Sunlight peaking through the dark forest, lighting the crumbling trenches of the Great War landscape below. #Verdun110
