A black German shepherd dog lying in “sphinx” pose in winter grass. She has speckled toes and muzzle. She is smiling at the camera, tongue hanging out. The light is golden. She has a rock between her front paws.

[pet death] I am sorry to report that my lovely Brienne of Bark passed away two days ago of aggressive pancreatic cancer. She was a goofy dingdong dingo who was obsessed with rocks. She was ten; not very old but definitely not young anymore, either.

She went fast while being very loved on.

In recent decades, she continued to appear in public to promote animal rights, but she gained notoriety for her political views, which many saw as racist. This came to particular light in her two-volume memoir,
"Initiales B.B." (1996-97), in which she made negative comments about several groups, including Muslims.

In 2004, Ms. Bardot was convicted of inciting racial hatred, and fined, for similar comments in "A Cry in the Silence," a nonfiction best seller in which she referred to Muslims as
"cruel and barbaric invaders" and made derogatory comments about gay people.
By 2008, she had been convicted of the same charge five times.

Brigitte Bardot, the actress, was known for Le Mépris (Contempt); Bardot, the political figure, embodied racial hatred. Convicted five times for inciting racial hatred, Bardot remained, for three decades, an exception in French culture - the only celebrity to openly defend the far right. In the 199os, after withdrawing from film sets, the star adopted those views and married Bernard d'Ormale, adviser to Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the far-right Front National (FN), the precursor to today's Rassemblement National. He remained her husband until the end of her life.

NYT graf #16:
“gained notoriety for her political views, which many saw as racist.”

Le Monde **FIRST sentence**:
“…the political figure, embodied racial hatred.”

Another example of the power of editorial choices and values. The NYT editors are telling on themselves.

Also: you know you're a piece of shit and NOT a beloved figure of French cinema when Le Monde openly condemns you.

Reason #467 why framing matters

The NYT article doesn't even mention Bardot's far right politics & bigotry until the 16th paragraph - most people have probably stopped reading by then - mildly stating that "she gained notoriety for her political views, which many saw as racist."

Half the people yelling about "car culture" are basically just browbeating people who can't afford to live where they work and can't afford to work where they live. All THEY hear from you is "I'm morally superior because I can afford to spend 3 hours a day walking/biking to places."

I know it's too much to read the words that many of us write, but what we are actually mad about are systems that force people into car dependency and policy choices that mean living somewhere walkable and bikeable with robust public transit is ridiculously expensive. We want to fix this!

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

How Rob Reiner became anti-Prop. 8 kingpin Rob Reiner reflects on the critical role he played in getting California's gay marriage ban overturned.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

Since Polygon is leaving it out of the headline: Epic Games partnered with The Game Awards to put money into the pocket of a bigot who uses her wealth to further the genocide of trans people through lawsuits and legislation. Every 'free' game gives money directly to JKR, and they are complicit.

Immigration Agents Are Using Air Passenger Data for Deportation Effort

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

It’s a public service not a business. Losses are not relevant. It’s in the goddamn constitution. Gonna lose my mind. AAAAAAAAAHHHHH

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.

Hilariously, my spouse and I recently moved back from ~49ºN (Paris, France) and I've previously lived in England (51ºN) and Ireland (53ºN), but this is the first time I've seen the aurora borealis! But we lived in cities in Europe and are now in rural Texas.
