but i think our modern audience and the people writing for that audience have vastly misunderstood the point of hopeful sci-fi for the most part. do we love the drama? yes. do we deserve a better quality of sociopolitical commentary in our narratives? yes!!!

thinking about the Intent™ of olde sci-fi versus new sci-fi. Older stories delighted in exploring the unknown and showcasing humanity's hubris and weakness as a way to highlight a path forward to growth, evolution, and a better life. Nowadays, the money is in content without meaning.

I'm not actually struggling to understand, I'm paying attention to the credits.

And I don't even *like* TOS! ...but it was the blueprint... tbh my Trek Ethos was nurtured and cultivated by DS9 and Lower Decks and Disco, so maybe I'm just built different (????), but I'm truly struggling to understand why they are having such a hard time making something meaningful.

Episode 9 was *close* to a return to form, but this show has no idea what it is or what it should be. Bring back the Disco team, they understood the assignment even if they were clunky about it at times! Connection! Compassion! Collaboration!!!

Can I say something? This season of Strange New Worlds has been so "Not Star Trek" that I'm like, ready to be fully Team Gorn?

It's all down to Values™. The Enterprise just hasn't been living up to its reputation, and I'm wondering how they're ever going to establish the roots of the TOS ethos. :/

Part of snw's issue is it includes a lot of conservative ideas that seeped into trek during the berman era along with some new ones without all the far more left leaning writers then in text challenging those elements with compelling foils. Its steeped in nostalgia, but thats only a partial memory.

You know, this makes me think of my friend's star trek PADDs theory: To explain why the PADDs on 90s trek are basically single use documents instead of personal devices like we have now, she says they realized that having those was BAD FOR YOU so they don't do that anymore. This is the same idea.
