structured to persuade — interaction is optimized to the point of rendering a real encounter superfluous; the otherness of persons in the flesh is neutralized, and relationships are reduced to functional responses. Dear friends, you, however, are real persons!

When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread.
What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.

I missed this from @phineas.bsky.social when it originally came out but it sure feels relevant at the moment.

Also, you can buy this as a print from the artist here:

Elizabeth Moss starts out at you from the cover of Margaret Atwood's Handmaid's Tale.

What an extraordinary novel. Plenty of echoes here of events throughout history and of today's world. Lots to unpack, but a very elegantly told story how ordinary people act to control others. Magnificent. #HandmaidsTale #MargaretAtwood #Booksof2026. No. 4

"Magataotao" on Twitter writes: "I am Catholic. This👇is not my Pope."

Attached is a video of the Pope saying that we should search for peace and reject war.

A community note under their tweet says: "You are not a Catholic if you do not accept the Pope, but rather a schismatic.

Canon 751: “Schism is the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff,” ie. the Pope.

This is a major problem. Certain high-status institutions are hoovering up students for whom they don't have space or teaching capacity.

It's not good for students, it's driving other universities to disaster and it has none of the benefits of either a planned or a "market" system.

Walking reading a phone is "dumbwalking", so doing so when reading a novel is surely "smartwalking"?

Perhaps there is also a sliding scale that depends on the book; Dostoevsky at the top, airport novels at the bottom?

The 25th Amendment Isn't Coming to Save Us Trump's deranged behavior has some Democrats selling a fantasy to voters

The calls for the 25th Amendment are understandable but misguided. J.D. Vance and Trump’s cabinet are not accountable to voters in November. We need voters to understand that Trump is only able to act like this because Republicans in Congress let him. messagebox.substack.com/p/the-25th-a...

'Cats: The Jellicle Ball' review: Astonishing Broadway revival will leave your purring with delight 'Cats: The Jellicle Ball' does as the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic did in 1982: innovates, astonishes, and exceeds expectations. The Ballroom-infused reimagining is a revival worthy of the Heaviside layer.

A hand holds a book. There is green grass in the background. The books has white text on black, "The Wars of the Roses" by David Grummitt. The image is of medieval knights fighting in battle; some on horseback and some on foot. This is an image of the Battle of Barnet in 1471.

This didn't take long. An excellent view of the #WarsoftheRoses era which loses much of the soap-opera of Weir (which I enjoyed a lot) but puts back essential historiography and analysis. Very useful chapters on the era as a whole. Superb - useful for students. #DavidGrummitt #Booksof2026. No. 2

Holibobs is certainly a terrible word.

So is "wellibobs" for Wellington Boots.

And
"Bolibobs" for Champagne.

Although that last one might just be in Ab Fab.
