A horizontal timeline chart titled “Viz-ibly, we’ve come a long way: The evolution of maps, graphs and data visualisation,” spanning from 6000 BC to the 2000s. Events are grouped into four rows: Cartography, Statistics & Graphics, Technology, and Other.

In Cartography, milestones are marked such as first known map (6200 BC), first world map (550 BC), latitude/longitude (90 AD), cylindrical projection (1569), first modern atlas (1570), choropleth maps (1819, 1826), London Underground map (1933), GIS (1960), and early weather and disease maps.

In Statistics & Graphics, markers include early star charts and Earth measurements (240–134 BC), planetary diagrams (950), first data graph (1644), bar and line graphs (1786), pie chart (1801), mortality curves (1828), age pyramid (1874), and later methods like Chernoff faces, treemaps, parallel coordinates, ISOTYPE, Grammar of Graphics, and Gapminder.

In Technology, markers include parchment (170 BC), paper (105 AD), movable type (1453), graph paper (1794), lithography (1798), first photograph (1827), first digital computer (1944), Fortran (1957), and S language (1978).

In Other, milestones include color system diagrams (1758), periodic table (1869), and fisheye view (1981).

Yes. Living on the south coast these days, but am in London reasonably often. Will drop you a DM

Thanks. Means a lot... I feel like it has music festival line-up vibes to it, but hopefully in a good way!

Will be sure to give you a nudge if I have a chance to update it with newer data from the high-res dataset.

Didn't realise you were in the UK these days. Hope all's well health-wise!

Graphic showing the daily themes of #30DayChartChallenge: Day 20. Global Change Day 29. Monochrome

I had originally started working on this visual for the #Monochrome theme (Day 29 of #30DayChartChallenge), but couldn't resist publishing it a bit earlier. I started with the intention of creating a two-tone version of @edhawkins.org's #WarmingStripes, but decided to push it a little further.

The data for this visualisation is downloaded from @berkeleyearth.org. Their data currently only goes up to 2020, and I've excluded any country that doesn't have data available there up to that date (eg. USA) berkeleyearth.org/data/

Hotting Up! A visualisation of the 20 warmest years on record by country, from 1850 to 2020. The graphic shows a barcode-like visualisation for each country, with the bars clustered towards the right, showing a general warming trend across the globe. For all 180 countries, 2020 was one of the 20 hottest years on record.

Yesterday, Israel used a triple tap attack to kill paramedics in Lebanon. This means that they first bombed, waited for paramedics to come, bombed again, waited, and then bombed again. It was all caught on camera.

There is no peace possible with this.

Ever wondered what a network of twin cities around the world would look like? I grabbed some data from #Wikidata a while ago, and thought #Experimental day 5 of the #30DayChartChallenge was a good excuse to share this half-finished gizmo with the world. Enjoy! bothness.github.io/twin-cities/

A mosaic chart which resembles a bar chart, but the width of the bars is proportional to an absolute number. The x axis are the decades from the 1960s to the 2020s (through 2023). The y axis shows the share of crew members by gender.
Female crew members over the decades:
1960s: 0.1%, 1970s: 0%, 1980s: 6%, 1990s: 15%, 2000s: 13%, 2010s: 13%, 2020s: 19%

The share of female astronauts among the crew members on space missions has risen slowly over the past few decades. Nevertheless, the crew remains predominantly male.

Inspired by the #ArtemisII mission.

I expect the distinction between "cities" and other kinds of population centres on Wikidata probably isn't fully consistent. A mixture of different definitions by country and inconsistent tagging

2 weeks ago 1 0 0 0

Giving this a go, and I found loops like Dunedin - Edinburgh - Saint Petersburg - Shanghai -Dunedin interesting. But I am just as interested in what must be the history behind singletons like Otaru (only paired with Dunedin) bothness.github.io/twin-cities/

2 weeks ago 6 1 2 0

Clusters are quite unusual compared to other datasets I've seen, since cities are never twinned with other cities in the same country... In the case of singletons, in reality many may be twinned with "towns" that aren't included in this dataset (Also FYI St Petersburg has the most twins of any city)
