While we are transfixed by the antics of our supposed "leaders", a catastrophe of astonishing proportions has been creeping up on us. Climate scientists now believe it is more likely than not to happen, and soon.
This week's column.

Er, this is what it’s doing. Shame it’s not reported more prominently.
This should have been front-page news.
Here’s the most important issue in UK politics today and until the election.
But our future survival and prosperity does not seem entertaining enough for the media to inform and educate the public on what is at stake.
This is the biggest story in UK politics now and until the next election.
Lost in the noise is what was not said yesterday by Olly Robbins: why Mandelson was borderline in developed vetting.
We were told it was not his Epstein links, but Robbins would not say - respecting confidentiality - if it was already public or known to Starmer. That makes a big difference.
Well, Iran hasn’t opened the f**king strait, but Trump has extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
As he’s continuing the blockade, the strait will surely remain closed.

In China battery electric trucks and hybrid trucks now outsell diesel trucks for the first time.
COST SAVINGS ARE THE KILLER.
“The company believes that large-scale equipment electrification projects like this will help it to both eliminate of thousands of tons of harmful carbon emissions annually, while also delivering substantial operational cost savings and reduced dependency on diesel.”
My immediate thought was this would be detrimental to any life in the canal.
But then I realised it is a pipe with a solar panel surface.
Just don’t do it to rivers.
Will the Republicans also lose their fear of exposing Trump incompetence?
The Finance Minister this week when Trump blasted the UK for not helping to open the Strait: "If that's the aim, well it was open a few weeks ago."
"I'm not convinced that we are safer today than we were a few weeks ago."

Great article from @georgemonbiot.bsky.social on Trump’s idiocy accelerating the green transition he despises.
However, the “corrupt and filthy” oil and gas industry did enable the technological society now on the verge of sustainability. It’s time is done, but the human ingenuity was amazing.
Kamala Harris warned that Putin would eat Trump for lunch.
Now Trump has lifted sanctions on Russian oil in an attempt to reduce the impact of his Iranian misadventure.
⬇️ ‘Zelensky criticized that decision. “In my view, Russia played the Americans again—played the president of the United States.”’
After Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will no longer be used as a weapon…
Iran closes Strait of Hormuz over US blockade.
It’s almost as if Trump doesn’t have a clue and even with the world’s most powerful military at his command is not in control of events.
2/2
What Trump said.
Post 2. Iran closes Strait of Hormuz over US blockade.
1/2
The Hormuz Strait situation was created by Trump.
As the British Finance Minister said this week when Trump was blasting the UK for not helping to open the Strait: "If that's the aim, well it was open a few weeks ago."
"I'm not convinced that we are safer today than we were a few weeks ago."
TACO strikes again.
This is another case of TACO.
President Donald J. Trump, known for his ignorance, criticises UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying he should increase dependency on gas to reduce energy prices.
Renewables are cheaper – but are pegged to the price of gas, set by global markets, in a system Starmer is reportedly set to change. ⬇️
More TACO.
Iran said it would close the Strait of Hormuz until the bombing of Lebanon stops.
Trump has PROHIBITED Israel from bombing Lebanon and announced a 10-day ceasefire and summit.
Trump now portrays Iran opening the Strait as his victory.
This is what @theguardian.com was saying 11 months ago. ⬇️
And not very good plagiarism at that.
It’s as if it’s not really intelligent at all, just matching patterns without true understanding.
Never forget - you can’t trust AI.
Staggering too how @theguardian.com applauded the appointment and credited Mandelson with securing a trade deal with Trump.
If you look back on @theguardian.com reporting you will find the answer to this question.
Yet @theguardian.com gave Mandelson credit for helping to secure better terms with Trump in a trade deal.
Nothing about Epstein links 11 months ago in this article, but applause: “For the UK and for Mandelson personally, it sets him up in Washington for the first time as a top player.”
Worth remembering that some in the commentariat were applauding the appointment of Mandelson less than a year ago.
As in @theguardian.com ⬇️
