When I was a teenager I definitely fetishised certain objects, Lamy, Victorinox, Leatherman, Maglite, artist pencils I can’t recall the brand of. Other than phones do kids today still do the same? I have a feeling pens and tools might be a bit ‘old man’ behaviour now?

Just had my final Berlin Film Festival meeting and ended on a bang. A clutch of exciting deals confirmed, an even bigger batch of titles lined up for the future (pending approvals, master checks etc) which is VERY exciting. Flags won’t do it justice but it’s very exciting!

So sad to hear of the passing of David Lynch, perhaps the greatest artist of his generation. What a hole he will leave behind, there wasn’t anyone like him. I knew deep down we wouldn’t be getting new work from him with his illness but to have that confirmed by his passing is truly devastating. RIP

Naturally I’ll be doing my damnedest to repeat that this year…

In the whirlwind that was Christmas and the return to work I realise I haven’t thanked all who voted in the DVDBeaver poll in which Radiance was ranked top label and also placed the top two (and more) blurays. An incredible honour and privilege that honestly floored me.

I’m signing off for 2024, for me a pretty good year for which I am very thankful. Very happy with the Radiance 2025 slate, very happy with the 2024 slate too but I’m always looking forwards. Didn’t see enough films in the cinema, didn’t see enough films period. Something to correct for next year.

Fave first watches 2024 (chronological):

In nome della legge
Il cammino della speranza
Diamonds of the Night
Targets
We’re All Going to the Worlds Fair
Hit Man
Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest

Excludes future Radiance (aka the real best I saw)

The Polish poster for 'War of the Worlds: Next Century', featuring three human ears with numbered metal tags attached to them.

War of the Worlds: Next Century/Wojna światów – następne stulecie
(Piotr Szulkin, Poland, 1981)

The double dedication to H.G. and Orson Well(e)s niftily establishes both content and tone of Szulkin's second feature; it deals not only with a Martian invasion but the media's manipulated reaction.

Bo Widerberg’s THE MAN FROM MAJORCA (1984) is a neo noir combining FRENCH CONNECTION style aesthetic & thrills with a critique of Sweden’s Cold War security state. I wrote an essay for the upcoming @filmsradiance.bsky.social release about film & its influences, including Leif Persson’s source novel

Wow incredibly bowled over to hear Tracy Letts single out Radiance as the label to collect everything! Thank you Tracy and @seanfennessey.bsky.social for your kind words! Excellent episode too, jealous of Tracy’s excellent parenting “yay it’s in black and white”!

Super pumped to watch this tonight. @filmsradiance.bsky.social knocked it out of the park with this cover design. It will be nice to see a proper transfer of this film.

Big shout-out to including a translated review from when it came out. One of my favorite things Radiance has been doing recently.
