I remember the first animation I ever did, which incidentally was pixel art, was of a walking cycle. It's a pretty good place to start I think, not too easy and not too difficult and helps you get the hang of things

Mainly inspired by the "Warrior Vase" below, and Dimitrios Katsikis' reconstructions. Funnily it had nothing to do with Nolan's upcoming film.
"Mycenaean Warrior"
Was meaning for this to just be a sketch but I couldn't help it

Having a light pixel with a dark pixel immediately below it helps define the illusion of a ring as well in this context, makes it "pop" in a sense.
Three dimensonality (having a clear form through shading), and the direction of rings (concentric in this case).
I didn't want a dithering pattern since it feels a little flat to me, so I winged it a bit and it turned out well enough.
Should've really wrapped it up last year, but that it's for now with the helmet collection

It's a majestic creature truly
Some pixel art from last year.
Was focusing hard on studying and nailing down some key concepts, so I didn't create a whole lot of actual artworks in the end, but, I think this year you'll start seeing the "fruits" of 2024.

A little on the older side (2019), but I think it still holds up well enough. Decided to add it on Inprnt as well for anyone who's interested:

This is actually a recolour of the original piece from last year, to better suit printing; the original had some very saturated greens and blues that would turn out quite bad if left as is:
"Hell Hound"

Certainly!
As far as atitude I'm not sure, but if you want to improve your perception studying/imitation is probably the most efficient way to do so.
This was my first experiment making a piece without using any isolated/orphan pixels (i.e. just clusters of 2 or more pixels), an exercise I learned from @helmll.bsky.social that forever changed how I think about pixel placement. #pixelart
More studies of this type, this time with cleaner hatching
Yes I think so, I'd treat it as matter of convenience. It's easier to learn from something simple (strong contrast), than complex (subtle transitions), and you can often translate the former into the latter with relative ease At the same time you do have things that must be studied for their subtlet
Here's the reference photo
In this case it was pretty simple because the light was strong, so the terminator served as the outline or boundary
If you want to draw nice looking shapes, a good method to learn doing so is by studying seemingly abstract shapes in nature, such as silhouettes of mountains, stains, shadows, etc. this will also give you a good grasp of the distribution/spacing between them.
Here's a recent study as example:
Funnily that wasn't an inspiration
