I assumed that she was attempting to establish common ground with him in order to get him to be more forthcoming and to listen to her. It obviously didn't work.

When I was deeply involved in federal politics, I was in a similar situation - not as highly visible, but offered quite a cushy job with travel, accommodations, meals, etc - and when I was issued a directive where I had to lie, I got out of politics altogether. So I really don't get it.
