To me, the writer is trying to take responsibility NOW. Since it is impossible to go into the past and change one's past actions, I personally can't ask a whole lot more than, "Start where we are now, figure out what went wrong, make a new choice, and move forward." (That's what I teach my kids.)

Yes, he did give explanations. I think, with any choices, explanations help us understand why someone made the choices/actions they did. I guess, for me, explanations are not the same as excuses. Explanations explain. Excuses try to say why it's not one's fault.

It took courage to go public with this. Especially having little kids. A LOT of courage. Rather than berate for "taking so long" I applaud for making the jump AND being willing to do so in such a public way, making no excuses. Wow.
