Seniors Are More Conservative Because the Poor Die Off Sometimes older voters aren’t just naturally more conservative. It’s just that wealthier and whiter people tend to live longer and healthier lives.

Hey, just a quiet reminder: it’s not true that people get more conservative as they age. *Populations* get more conservative as they age because poor and marginalized people die sooner.

‘A history of family violence’: in the NT, a mother’s loss and a police system in dire need of overhaul No crime scene was established after Mona’s daughter died. She speaks publicly about the death for the first time to ensure it is not forgotten and to urge action

Please take the time to read this piece. The mother who gave so much of her time to make it possible deserves it.

CW: mental ill health + suicide.

The welfare system kills people.

Politicians force us to live in poverty, then pretend to care with band-aid funding for services that do nothing to address the poverty & cruel welfare policies that drive us to despair.

Thx @caitkelly.bsky.social for reporting.

Really pleased to have this statement from MEAA today for #TDOV2025

"Trans & gender diverse people disproportionately experience unemployment and insecure work, making trans justice part of the work of our union"

‘No rules’: Gaza’s doctors say they were tortured, beaten and humiliated in Israeli detention Healthcare workers are protected under international law yet hundreds were detained during the war. Now, some of Gaza’s most senior doctors have spoken of the violence and abuse they say they faced

“I asked them what they were doing coming into the operating theatre,” he says. “One of the soldiers pointed at me and said: ‘Are you Dr Issam Abu Ajwa?’ I said: ‘Yes, that’s me.’ And then the beating began.”

Political interference in artistic expression must stop Artistic and creative organisations across Australia must reaffirm their commitment to freedom of expression following a series of interventions over the past 12 months which have resulted in artists ...

“The arts & freedom of expression are closely intertwined... interference which seeks to prevent this must be unreservedly condemned. This is an industrial & workplace issue – one that goes to the very heart of the rights of artists not only as creators, but as workers.”

Raising rental assistance will not fix this. Without reform and ending landlord incentives like negative gearing, renters will continue to be used as commodities

Being sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians, and sharing the injustices committed by Israel are not at odds with being a journalist or good journalism.

Our industry often awards/elevates journalists who speak unashamedly on human rights & social justice issues
