Least Favorite D&D Species A few weeks ago, I talked about my favorite species archetypes in RPGs. I knew I wanted to do the opposite, but as I was writing the list, I realized the selections were all specific to one game system or another. I may do another post in thsi series for Pathfinder at another time, because that game has some goofy ancestries, but for this post, we'll keep it with Dungeons and Dragons options.

I covered my favorite species a few weeks back, let's talk about the other side of the spectrum. Well, for D&D ones anyway.

Building Jask We're doing another character build post, this time using KibblesTasty's Psion, and we're going to build a character that's been mentioned a few times on this blog, most recently in the Critical Role Campaign 4 series: Jask, the Changeling Psion. Kibs' Psion is built using a combination of 2 design elements; the warlock framework of limited resources that return on a short rest combined with the classic Psion design element of Psi Points.

D&D Character concepts – February 2026 Month 2 of 2026 is in the rear view mirror, and with it we have another character challenge to cover For this month, I chose to focus on the four new classes that are being worked on by KibblesTasty and somanyrobots and dedicate a week from the month to try and make at least one character from each class. They weren't the only things I made this month, but I had to do at least one for a new class a week, and I couldn't overlap.

Revisiting Older Characters When coming up with monthly subchallenges for this year's character creation challenge, one idea I jotted down was to revisit some older characters that were essentially alternate universe versions of characters i had made before, and see if I could make wholly original characters using their class/subclass. In preparation for this, I started making lists of potential characters I felt might warrant changing.

When you make a lot of character ideas, sometimes you look back on old ones that in hindsight aren't great.

This post details a few of those I ended up revising or outright replacing.

Maybe it’s just me but I feel like everyone always talks about Denver elevation and how dangerous it can potentially be yet both Santa Fe and Cheyenne are higher up and I can’t ever remember hearing warnings about them.

Burning Strike was a “this looks goddamn cool” pick but Electrify seems tailor made for Spellblade so I felt it was a must have.

I mean at its core Spellstrike just lets you cast a 1A spell as a BA and then deliver it with a melee attack, right? Those spells just have that built into the spell itself, but they still felt thematically appropriate

Update on this. She wanted to break up with her orc boyfriend. The rest of the party said she isn’t allowed to. 🤣

Building Julian 2026 is going to have a lot more character build posts here on YQLIF, and today we're going to do one for KibblesTasty's Spellblade class. I've talked about this class a bit, if you're familiar with the Magus from Pathfinder, it's basically a 5e version of that. You cast a spell with your bonus action, then Spellstrike with your action, which both hits the target with your weapon and discharges the spell into them.

I want to do more build posts this year using classes from @kibblestasty.com and @somanyrobots.com so we're gonna start it out with Kibs' Spellblade. Enjoy!
