Great source of info on regionl grids from @gridstatus.io

What a great idea! Redwood Materials to deploy a "used battery" storage facility at Rivian vehicle factory.
Every large industrial facility should have some battery storage - and better yet, make it used batteries.

New peak wind generation records are occurring almost daily for @caiso.com. Before this trend started, the previous record was from 2022 - what gives?
My guess: this wind is the beginning of the massive wind imports CA will be receiving from the SunZia project in NM.
Thanks to @gridstatus.io
@caiso.com Battery discharge went over 12 GW for the first time last night! Just two years ago, the record was about 6GW.

Add another record to the list - this time maximum solar for MISO at 15,669 MW - a more than 1GW increase from the previous record.

ERCOT gets hurt by the inability to "trade" with nearby grids like @caiso.com can...
Below is from a few weeks ago... I could see 90+% fossil free in the next couple of years.
That didn't take long... ERCOT passes 30,000 MW in solar generation.

The first utility-scale battery storage system is live in Montana - 75 MW/150 MWh.
BHEM is also building a 120MW solar system, which should go live this year. More clean energy for the #WesternGrid
Huge potential for solar/storage in Montana.

February is usually the start of the "record season" in the electricity market.
Kick it off with a new record for solar in ERCOT... should be passing 30,000 MW shortly.
Thanks to @gridstatus.io for info.

Would love to hear from Fervo what their current costs and projections are...maybe a ballpark?
@timlatimer.bsky.social @serrurier.bsky.social
US battery storage is exploding... up more than 15,000MW (= 15GW) this last year.
Expect more than 20 GW to be added in 2026.

From the latest ERCOT fact sheet - www.ercot.com/files/docs/2...
Some good nuggets....
California grid operator - @caiso.com is out with its Key Statistics report for December. Plenty of interesting factoids for those interested.

Here is one : Installed BESS ended the year at almost 16GW.
This is an increase from about 11.5 GW in 2024.

‘By 2050, sodium-ion batteries with fast learning rates could deliver storage at 11–14 €/MWh – cheaper than lithium-ion at 16–22 €/MWh…stationary battery demand reported to date – ranging from 67.9 to 106.5 TWh by 2050…feature higher energy-to-power ratios (6–7 h)’
No-brainer: if you have a retired fossil plant with an interconnection - add battery storage.

Show me the rate base !
Second phase:
"Construction of a second BESS – Duke Energy’s largest, a 167‑MW, four-hour system – will begin in May on 10 acres where the coal plant’s now-demolished emissions control system once stood."
FIrst phase- 50 MW/200 MWh
"The first BESS, at a cost of approximately $100 million, was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, serving customers beginning in November. Final testing is being completed this month. "
No-brainer: if you have a retired fossil plant with an interconnection - add battery storage.

Good to see the New England grid expanding its portfolio...
3) @caiso.com recently released its peak load history - see below. With 15 GW of storage now available, these infrequent peak loads are much easier to handle than in the past.

2) Thanks to @gridstatus.io we can also see that the battery charge to load ratio is near 40%. This was unthinkable a few years ago.

1) Battery storage on #CAISO is now being regularly charged at over 10 GW.

1) ERCOT released its 2025 Demand and Energy report
www.ercot.com/files/docs/2...
Although overall demand increased by 26.2 TWh, fossil generation was flat, with an increase in coal mostly offset by a decrease in gas.
Most of the new demand was met by a solar increase of 19.6 TWh.

Here is something every state should have/look into - EV charging in DMV lots.
It also makes sense to add solar in these parking lots.
No-brainer.
