If I had a kid with an IEP, right about now I would:
1. Contact (read: hound) my senator
2. Write a script for myself re: FAPE as a pillar of IDEA
3. Be prepared to file a formal complaint; prepare for due process
4. Ensure my kids minutes are still being met
5. Talk to other parents/guardians

Can you imagine being an educator and administrator today? My stomach is in knots worried about what is about to happen to the Department of Education. All the funding that is about to be pulled. Our poor children and special needs children will suffer most. Mercy please.

When I was a Sped teacher in mid-MO I serviced so many kids of Trump supporters. I never asked but MAGA hats at IEP meetings tipped me off. I serviced these students with efficacy, fidelity& care. IDEA federal funds is how sped exists in all states. W/o these funds, sped can’t survive. I can’t.

Loads of unintended consequences have come from new policy frameworks or innovations under IDEA/FAPE/NCLB etc but at least one of those unintended (or, rather, intended) consequences wasn’t a complete and utter disregard for public education and the children it serves

In 2001, President GWB established presidents commission on excellence in special education by EO; reasserting the federal role in the education of students with disabilities & support of IDEA. My how far the [GOP] have fallen.
