It used to be that a family could pay for groceries and their power bill with some leftover with their TANF money.

Now, TANF doesn’t even come close to providing the same relief. In fact, TANF falls about $100+ short of covering the same amount of groceries and electricity as it did in 1998.

This has been an issue for soooo long - despite being one the most effective ways to support families! Seriously one of the most studied programs....

Can we do better now? Please?

Public defenders handle majority of NJ criminal cases. How it works Meet the people behind the public defender system in New Jersey, and why it's not like what you see on TV or in movies.

Public defenders are a critical part of our justice system. And this article highlights just how important they are - but there is a catch, and you might have missed it. The Office of the Public Defender, which is amazing, only handles Superior Court Cases. (1/2)

Who Pays for a Per-Employee Medicaid Fee? - New Jersey Policy Perspective The current proposal’s design could harm workers and miss the mark on sustainable funding.

🚨 New Analysis 🚨

A fee tied to individual employees’ health coverage will encourage employers to find loopholes and harm workers.

Revenue raisers should focus on ensuring that the ultra-wealthy and corporations pay for health care, while protecting Medicaid enrollees.

States Should Forge Ahead With New Revenues in Face of Misleading Tax Migration Claims Most claims about interstate tax migration are grossly exaggerated. A robust body of evidence shows people are not primarily motivated to uproot their lives and leave their communities because of how ...

State residents benefit when policymakers raise new revenues to fund schools, housing, and other services, and evidence shows fears of tax-driven migration are overstated, with only about 1.5% of people moving between states each year. www.cbpp.org/blog/states-...

Why NJ Advocates Say the New Immigrant Trust Laws Aren’t Enough – NJ Urban News New Jersey codifies immigrant protections under Gov. Mikie Sherrill, but advocates warn loopholes still leave residents at risk.

Recent protections for New Jersey's immigrant communities are a good first step, but don't go far enough to defend the state's residents.

"There’s more to do to protect the people of New Jersey,” said @marleinau.bsky.social.

The World Cup doesn't need any more of NJ's tax dollars • New Jersey Monitor Some NJ lawmakers are eyeing a temporary sales tax hike to coincide with the World Cup. I think we’ve spent enough on the tournament.

Temporary revenue raisers help offset costs of hosting an event that attracts visitors from all over the world.

"It’s not like FIFA is cutting us a check — it makes sense to offset some of those costs with temporary revenue raisers,” said @ptrchn1.bsky.social.

N.J. electric bills are spiking — and AI data centers are to blame, new report says The surge in AI data centers contributed to a roughly 20% jump in electric bills last summer, a new study says.

Families are getting hit twofold with consequences from data centers.

“They’re paying more each month to subsidize data center expansion, and they’re breathing dirtier air because these facilities are keeping polluting power plants running," said @alexfromnj.bsky.social.

The report recommends that lawmakers

💡 Create a standard definition of a data center for state regulation,
💡 Build strong guardrails for data center companies around transparency and energy resource requirements,
💡 Standardize energy load forecasting,
💡 Remove or restrict data center subsidies

The report finds that a typical large AI data center uses as much energy as 100,000 households. Some facilities under construction will use 20 times that amount.

Large AI data centers used about 14 billion gallons of water in 2024, a number that could double by 2028.

Utility companies — and their political donations — are top of mind in NJ elections As energy costs skyrocket, campaign contributions from utility companies could become a liability.

Utilities' focus should be bringing down costs for consumers — not influencing elections.

“These utility companies are raking in record profits while small businesses and families are struggling to pay their electricity bills,” said @alexfromnj.bsky.social.

A win! This is no doubt a win!

But - ALPR (license plate reader data) was carved out of the privacy bill. This is a big part of how ICE tracks people. There are also loopholes in the Immigrant Trust Directive.

We must keep pushing our lawmakers to protect our constitutional rights.

Almost a decade ago, Trump slashed the corporate income tax rate by nearly a third.

But corporations are paying far below that 21% rate thanks to enormous tax breaks and loopholes.

That's how these four big tech companies paid a collective tax rate of just 4.9% last year.

We must protect the gains we’ve made under the Affordable Care Act • New Jersey Monitor NJ’s federal delegation must work together to address our health care affordability crisis, writes Laura Waddell of New Jersey Citizen Action

This legislation has been kicked around in a variety of forms and even watered down since 2017 - despite how urgently we need these protections.

Anything other than passage would be unfathomable at this point.

Cutting public programs that help families with low incomes won't help affordability.

"We can't really advance affordability if we're not also increasing revenues, particularly through taxation on wealthy individuals and corporations," said @ptrchn1.bsky.social.
