Before I forget, I used a base model I got from one of Marc Brunet's tutorials for this, so that's why the face doesn't look that much like Ghost yet. Will be fixed in the sculpting phase.

Blockout for my main character, Ghost, is done. The rest has to be done via sculpting. Translating her hair into 3D sure is something. Her hair will need to be rigged and 'flow' in the engine like it's underwater so there is still plenty of problem-solving ahead. π€ #GameDev #IndieDev
Loving the new UI! It's the perfect blend between fitting well into the game world and standing out enough for easy readability! I also really like circular bars tbh .3.
That is SO adorable! ππ»
As someone who grew up poor and still IS poor, it's important to me to have good performance so people with lower-tier gaming PCs can also play my games. But I'm the artistic type, not the technical type, so I'm β¨strugglingβ¨
I also changed anti-aliasing from the standard (TAA, I think?) to FXAA for now. Though apparently the best would be Sharpened FXAA + One Past Frame (FXAA + TAA) according to this video: youtu.be/lJu_DgCHfx4?...
Personally I turned off Nanite and Lumen bc I don't really need it for the look I'm going for, and I feel like it would needlessly lower the performance.
If you are an #UnrealEngine dev, did you also turn it off, or am I in the minority with that one? #GameDev #IndieGameDev
Things like this explain why so many #UnrealEngine games are so unoptimised tho. I guess people/artists either don't know the out-of-the-box stuff is expensive or they are running out of time and use the quick method instead of investing more time into a more performance-friendly method.
Apparently using dithered blending of UVs is meant to be cheaper than the WorldAlignedTexture node #UnrealEngine provides by default. I haven't looked into it further since I was just playing around and don't need a triplanar material (yet).
A common problem with game art tutorials is that while they are focused on things looking good, they are often neglecting the performance part, which would be kind of important for the game part. They don't even give a warning π #ArtistsProblems
I don't know if you already have that, but a lil animation where the cat watches a video with you (like real pets do) or "dances" when you're listening to music could be cute :3c
I considered turning the skull into a goat pendant (to symbolise Deetzer) but decided against it because that might be getting a little too close to the Witcher series. Fun fact: This game is NOT actually inspired by the Witcher; it's inspired by "Supernatural". #GameDev #CharacterDesign
Thicker stripes on the suit because they read better from afar. And removed the Lead symbol from her face since it has no story relevance. The coin plus goat symbol is for Deetzer (her pact partner) who is a demon of greed that likes to take the appearance of a black goat.
Kept the old gloves because they work better with the rest of the design. The X part of the necklace is gone since it was a little too much, so I only kept the V part. Everybody loved the boots, so they are staying, plus they make more sense for fieldwork.
The final design for my protagonist, Ghost (for now).

Dang, that's a glow-up!
Are you photobashing for textures now or is it all hand drawn?
Damn that's a good looking texture! So detailed and crisp!
I started modelling Ghost and got unhappy with the design, so I updated it again.
New on the left, and old on the right.
Which parts do you like about the update, and where do you prefer the old design? #GameDev #CharacterDesign
Yeah, exactly, it's really hard to get people to follow you on a new platform VS on one where they already have an account.
Someone else mentioned Fluxer which looks promising at first glance.
Fluxer looks promising π
At first glance the other two remind me more of WhatsApp than Discord tbh.
The component hierarchy and Construction-Script.
Ngl this is why I switched to UE. It has so much pre-build-in stuff that makes game dev a lot easier for artists/non-programmers.
In the Event-Graph of the Zombie Blueprint. Arrays are a girl's best friend <3 #GameDev #IndieGameDev #UE5
On-Spawn the zombies get random clothes, hair and a colour scheme to break up the monotony. That was surprisingly easy to implement. #GameDev #IndieGameDev #UE5
The communities do look appealing! I'm just worried that everyone will flee discord now bc of the age verification thing coming soon tbh π°
Yeah... I'm kinda eying the changes with suspicion too. But what to use instead?
I also have a #Discord group for my game/studio where I've been sharing stuff with only friends so far, and I haven't made it public yet for the same reasons as above. Perhaps I should just post the stuff from my Discord on my SM accounts to have more regular account activity?
#GameDev #IndieGameDev
Is #Discord still the app to use for game devs? If not, what's the new app? I've been meaning to join groups for indie game devs since forever but social anxiety and still being early in development has kept me from doing that so far ππ

The zombie got a bit of an update! It has hair and cloth variations now; wish me luck for the weight painting! I think I never had to do it for a character with layers before π¬

Auto-Rig Pro is a real lifesaver. But weight-painting is still the bane of my existence! #Blender #IndieGameDev
