Taking everything out including the -isms in the game leaves the world dramatically bled dry, like a tragedy but without the suffering.

And it makes sense. The main VtM theme is the tragic struggle with oneself, which can only end in catastrophy. The more destructive, entropic energy the world brings, the better. BUT if you marry the racism within the game to the written racist stereotypes it gets IMO very difficult to untangle.

The actually depicted -isms in the game (classism, clanism, which was just racism by another name) had an important function though. The vampire society as described is fascistic.

E. g. Clan Giovanni in Vampire: The Masquerade was the italian vampire clan, based in Venice, mostly incest and necrophilia affine Mafiosi, so a really terrible racist caricature. That alone could be fixed, I guess, in a complete rewrite and if I remember the authors did in the 5th ed.

I've never played D&D but the re-imaginings into less problematic game worlds and structures of long running rpg franchises is a fascinating topic.

One still open question to me is if you can reform any game world which had racism ingrained for a long time.
