My favorite is when I’m reading poorly-translated Chinese novels and they’ve replaced their Big City Name with an American Big City Name without making any other changes, so you end up with statements like “the 3-hour train ride from Los Angeles to Manhattan” or “she loved the seaside in Montana.”
I’m reading an urban fantasy in a subgenre that isn’t exactly famous for grounded realism, but I have to stop and take breaths and remind myself things like “that’s not how plumbing works” and “that’s a completely different country in Asia!!” So I don’t think the genre is the issue.
