Dear people applying to vacancies: if the vacancy asked for 2 references, don't write in your documents that they are available on request. This is the request!
And I keep getting frustrated about the dozens of people I have to reject immediately because they did not supply all requested documents.

This time, I explicitly included in the advertisement "Incomplete applications will be discarded immediately." Why on earth do I have so many applications with only a CV, or only a letter and a CV?! These are people with MSc degrees, no exception. How difficult is it to read?! Frustration!
I have two PhD positions (Utwente + LUMC) together with Jelle Goeman. Who wants to work on e-values for multiple testing with us?

We check the applications continually and arrange an interview as soon as a suitable candidate applies.
Would you present your next NeurIPS paper in Europe instead of traveling to San Diego (US) if this was an option? Søren Hauberg (DTU) and I would love to hear the answer through this poll: (1/6)
Fantastic initiative by @serge.belongie.com and Søren Hauberg 🇪🇺🇩🇰

The latter. Tax cuts for companies and the rich are more important to them than things as health care, education, innovation and climate. Universities are seem as left. Furthermore they think that asylum seekers are the cause of many problems and they try to make their life as difficult as possible.
Moreover, universities are crucial for innovation: the buzzword that our current government inserts as a solution to any problem: nitrogen, climate, microchips, farming, energy, and what not. Innovation should solve it. How are they planning to do that if they tear down all sources of innovation?
"Healthy universities are crucial for a flourishing democracy. They promote critical thinking, independent research and informed debates, which are essential for an engaged society. The planned cuts threaten academic freedom, innovation and equal access to education." www.utoday.nl/opinion/7535...
Today I am on strike. For the first time in my life. It is part of a relay strike among universities in The Netherlands to protest against the dramatic budget cuts higher education is facing. Earlier this year, already 47 tenured faculty members at our university were fired.
But I hate to reject. And I can't understand why all these people with master's degrees cannot read a simple vacancy with care and attention - again: for this job much more care and attention is needed than for this simple application. So please, send me complete applications via the system.
difficult than this simple, short vacancy text and where details matter; and you will have to submit papers to journals with user-undfriendly systems and the list of requirements for submission will be orders of magnitude more difficult and incomprehensible. So: failed to submit everything? Reject.
Why is it so difficult for most applicants to read the vacancy carefully and
1) submit all documents asked for, and
2) understand the sentence: "do not send your application per E-Mail".
During the PhD you need to be able to study mathematical papers which are orders of magnitude more
Jelle Goeman (Leiden University Medical Center) and I (University of Twente) have two PhD positions on e-values and multiple testing. The students will be co-supervised by both of us. A strong theoretical mathematical background is required.

That's more like someone has tried many jobs/tasks but did not manage to succeed in any of them. The sheep with the five legs is for example someone who needs to do many different things as part of one profession (and may succeed in some or all of them).
Hoi!
Nice!
In Dutch it is "het schaap met de vijf poten" - the sheep with the five legs".
... to a more open and welcoming environment. Have a look and join the movement!
There are many aspects to the job of an academic in which one can be kind. On our website we want to collect opinion pieces and research on those, accounts of kindness in academia, and offer inspiration and the possibility to contribute and endorse our views for a change ...
If we all propagate kindness, everyone in academia, from PhD students to full professors, can thrive and contribute to excellent scientific discoveries, teaching, leadership, and more. There is a lot of scientific research on how happy staff leads to better results in the workplace.

Kindness and excellence are two sides of the same coin. Having a working environment where everyone feels valued and can be themselves brings out the best in people.
I don't experience any problems...
On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a reminder to not close your eyes and turn away from what is happening in the US right now. Fascism is an assault on scientific integrity, knowledge, and innovation.

Thirdly, we add permutation- and knockoff-based methods that allow for relatively model-free inference. In this proposal we aim to combine the strengths of these three frameworks into a novel and coherent whole.
The new theory of hypothesis testing with e-values, co-developed by me, allows for flexible sampling plans. Jelle Goeman co-developed the closed testing framework that gives flexibility for defining research questions in a data-dependent way.
This means that researchers are able to adapt their research questions and sampling plans to the data as they come in, and in a way that is as model-free as possible. We achieve this by combining three recent exciting novel developments in mathematical statistics.
