Do you know that I’m conducting a survey for my research on emotions? If your 1st language is English or Japanese, please consider taking a few minutes to answer it. It’s anonymous and there’s a small gift at the end 🫶

Search triggered by this headline - in which the 'simpler times' are not those of the text world so much as the cultural context of the first adaptation
Google ngrams for the phrase simpler times. Shows this occurs from early 1800s onwards but peaks in present period
The #nostalgia for 'simpler times'. Ever present but increasing?
Spoiler alert: the imagined simpler times are very much not the same period.

I used the Parlamint corpus which is *free* to access
It offers interoperable and comparable corpora for parliamentary discourse across 29 countries and autonomous regions in Europe

The book came out of an excellent colloquium organised by Maria Calzada Perez & editors of this book. It was a brilliant opportunity to share ideas & learn
Whole book is free to download & includes contributions by @sofialampro.bsky.social @ricardzapata.bsky.social & colleagues not in this space
Key findings
- A wide range of emotions are referenced (not only negative)
- Little variation according to political orientation of speakers
- Emotion talk supports two familiar tropes: binary opposition of ‘deserving’ & ‘undeserving’ migrants & mythopoetic positive representation of the UK
📢New chapter: Emotion talk in UK parliamentary debates on migration
I look at the rhetorical use of explicit references to pride & gratitude, shame & regret, fear & tolerance

I see the University of York is offering a fixed-term post in public history for the same salary (£37k) I earned for a fixed-term post in public history, also in Yorkshire, in 2012. Had the rate risen with inflation it would now be £53k.

That's so shocking. What a waste of the author's time.

If you have never applied for a British Academy fellowship before, let me just say that you will need a lot of onboarding and the institution will have internal deadlines, so you should get in touch with your proposed partner institution/faculty mentor no later than end of January.
Would this be Frontiers previously-classed-as-predatory journals?
Worth a read. My take is that universities are undervaluing the importance of the external which makes the system vulnerable. EEs receive less time & information than previously and the work done by EEs is +/- ignored by the 'sending' institution
