Yes. Imagine a whole *film* for this. Think of how creative you can be with how this is shot. 😍

And with that complaint, that’s something you can tell they’re really working on! They’re fitting in all of the ASL, varying how characters sign, all within what room they have to work with. They’re working with the world of the film to make it so much more accessible.

But they’re really trying—especially with how animation allows them to pivot characters bodies to allow for what room they can. It’s such an amazing first step. It’s really nothing I’ve seen before.

My complaint is that the signing is still beholden to the original camerawork, cutting away from and misframing hands and faces—so, words, ideas, emotions—because they were still shot from a hearing perspective. Subtitles still need to be on.

I’m going to cry. This is so so so beautiful and I wish I had this as a kid with my Deaf parents when a ton of our Disney tapes didn’t even have captions yet. What a world Deaf and CODA kids get to grow up in now.

Wolfwalkers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Ted Lasso, and Velvet Underground are great starts!
