We have some very unfortunate news: The referendum will not be on the ballot in May

We have some very unfortunate news: The referendum will not be on the ballot in May

We collected more than the required number of signatures from registered Pittsburgh voters, but due to court challenges and legal technicalities many of them cannot be counted. Despite all our work, Not on Our Dime will not be on the ballot on May 20.

This is tough news.

Thank you.
Thank you for your solidarity in this push for direct democracy.
We hope this will have a ripple effect on other communities doing something similar. And we hope that you, like us, have truly felt the power we have when we work collectively.
With so much care,
Not on our dime

We did something truly amazing
With petitions circulated by hundreds of volunteers, and after talking to tens of thousands of neighbors, it’s clear that this city wants to divest from genocide.
We have become part of the inspiring mass movements in this moment committing to stand with Palestinians and against the war machine and we have so much to build on.

This is hard.
From all of the support we’ve had these past several months, we know that this will come as a big blow to so many people who poured their hearts and effort into this referendum making the ballot.
We’re up against a system that is designed to make this practically impossible, especially with such aggressive legal challenges.

We are so sorry if you were not able to attend.
We know this sort of decision should be discussed and decided in a wider collective forum, but the system is not designed for democratic movements.
If you have questions or just want to talk about this, please do not hesitate to reach out.

How this happened
Details of the case came to light last night indicating we were going to fall short on legally valid signatures, requiring the campaign to make a decision quickly.

Steering Committee members who were available met and made the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw. Shortly after, we shared and discussed with the folks who could attend our campaign call

What we know:
We needed 12,459 valid signatures to appear on the May ballot.
We submitted more than
21,400 signatures.More than 12,459 voters registered in the City of Pittsburgh signed the petition. However, legal technicalities made many of those signatures invalid and there was no way around it.

I agree with this generally but I also do think it's a good idea to first ask like "what are people doing here that is good and needs help" and spending at least 15 minutes looking into that before starting something from scratch

Donate We’re never going to outspend the war profiteers, military contractors, and pro-war political establishment that will line up to oppose this campaign, but we don’t need to outspend them.

Please donate if you can to help fund our campaign as we move into the next phase of our fight - defending our ballot access from any and all would be attacks to disenfranchise Pittsburgh's voters then pass this once it's on the ballot: notonourdimepgh.com/donate

Our community members have been very concerned about the ongoing assault on Gaza and the Palestinian Territories. Many are worried about the direction of democracy and foreign relations at the federal level.

Through just 7 weeks of intense campaigning in the cold and snow, hundreds of supporters have gathered and submitted over 21,300 signatures, well above the necessary threshold of 12,459 signatures.
