That being said, many people lack the critical thinking skills needed to understand that level of nuance. Better education is the long term solution for that. In the short term, perhaps a warning card or note in the film description on platforms would help, as they've done for other works.

I think, like any piece of media, one always needs to view it in the context of the time and culture it was made in. We should look at what they tell us of the society at the time, rather than letting them inform our opinion of the present.

It's a bit of a grey area because on the one hand it's definitely a product of its time, and reflects the fact that society didn't have the increased knowledge or awareness that we have today. On the other hand, trans folks have always existed, and the film is still weaponized against us today.
