With all the vibes of Greek myth in a gorgeous illustrated package, this graphic novel by @felicia.day and @skulkingfoxes.bsky.social (pub. Simon & Schuster) is a tale of worth, love, and how things - and people - are often not what they seem. It's a great choice for myth-mad kids...and adults!

Just a little update on this: I got such a surprising response! Some really great chats with people inside the industry, and a handful of production companies actually reaching out to hear the idea. I’m working it into a proper pitch document first, and then I’ll start pitching properly 💫
There is a joke for adults too: the writers of ‘Dad’s Army’ - David Croft and Jimmy Perry - get a name check in the second story as two corporals! And don’t miss the ‘Historical Note’ at the back that explains clearly and simply about the issues brought up in the stories.
With its realistic illustrations throughout and the strong message of friendship, resilience and dogged determination of the CSC (and Kathleen, who joins them), it shines a light on children in wartime Britain.
Full of the language of the period, it gives a real insight into Britain at war and although the stories are fun, they don’t shy away from the more serious aspects of life, like the post office messenger boy bringing Jimmy’s mum a telegram informing her that her husband was missing in action.
The Cobb Street Commandos (CSC) are three boys living in East London in 1941. Keen to do their bit and help the war effort, Jimmy, Bill and Stanley are looking for missions. These are not ‘pie in the sky’ missions; these are the things children would have actually been able to do at the time.
This is a great addition to the shelves of children’s fiction set in WW2, but what makes it special is that the three short stories are at a lower reading level than a lot of the books out there, making them accessible to struggling Yr6 readers who are looking for action-packed WW2 reads.
Thank you Sarah Doyle at @faberchildrens.bsky.social for the brown paper-wrapped proof of @tonybradman.bsky.social's and Aleksei Bitskoff's brilliant new series Tales of the Cobb Street Commandos out on 18th June (and the Spitfire lollypop!)
