Variolation, or inoculation with smallpox, preceded vaccination, and the practice has been (all too often) written out of popular narratives of the histories of vaccination because we need "great White men" stories still. And because its still non-historians who tell these popular narratives.
The real story of smallpox vaccination begins not with Sarah Nelmes (the milkmaid in question), or Jenner, or James Phipps, or Benjamin Jesty but with Turkish folk practitioners of variolation, enslaved people like Onesimus, and Indian variolators.
There would be no vaccination without variolation.
