Ahhh the FT give it a go was referring to helping the white house. I understand! Thanks for the clarification. Yeah... that sounds about right
Posts by Tim Prestby
Genuinely confused, are you saying this because the FT didn't quote you in the article or use maps from your books? They seemed to have explained a pretty fundamental cartography concept well.
That's a wrap! My third and final study from my dissertation is now published open-access in the journal of information visualization! Check it out here: doi.org/10.1177/1473....
I now have no publications in the pipeline...time to get back to writing ๐.
Flash back to your seminar on AI! Love it!
It's been 7 years since I first took my intro cartography class with @roberteroth.bsky.social. For readings, I enjoyed the GIS&T BoK entries from @ucgis.bsky.social. Things have come full circle. Stoked to share that my own BoK entry on "Map Interpretation" is now published doi.org/10.22224/gis...
an outdoor blllboard There will never be a bell loud enough, a helmet strong enough, or clothing bright enough to make up for poor infrastructure. Picture of child biking in a painted bike lane
Enough.
Awesome to see this billboard up in Vancouver.
Was really incredible to work with the people at @visionzerovancouver.ca to bring this to life.
Congratulations to @timprestby.bsky.social who accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Geospatial Information Science at James Madison University!
Yesterday was a special day. I successfully passed my dissertation defense yesterday and have been given the unofficial title of "Dr. Prestby" until graduation in May. Huge thanks to everyone at Penn State Geography, especially @arobinson.bsky.social for helping me achieve this milestone!!
We're hiring a new Assistant Teaching Professor for Penn State's online geospatial education programs: psu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/PSU_Ac...
This is hilarious. I may have to use this image when referring to the article in a low-stakes professional meeting and see if anyone says anything ๐
I'll be defending my dissertation two weeks from now on February 13 at 2:00pm eastern time. There will be a ~20 minute public talk. If you are interested in joining via zoom, shoot me a message and I will share the link!
Sent off my complete dissertation draft to the committee today. Wow the last 3ish years have flown by. I'll be defending in a month's time on February 13 at 2pm ET. There will be a public hybrid presentation around 30 minutes long. Will share more details soon! (Sorry for cross posting on Twitter)
Gorgeous
Does anyone know a great source for buying print maritime maps? Ideally from an individual cartographer/supporting a local business? I'd like to get one for a Christmas gift but don't know where to look.
This is extremely impressive. Wow.
Sorry was limited on characters so had to be concise at the expense of some details being omitted
@roberteroth.bsky.social brought you as a guest :)
It is a core cartographic memory of mine. Thankfully Daniel is great about documenting their design process through tutorials and other means, but the live in-person designing is a treat :). I blew my students' minds with holding shift to uniformly scale features in illustrator haha.
I went in to the class intent on making a map showing whether there were areas in San Francisco that had more 'tech bros' than families. We ended up leaning in to the 2024 trend of brat summer and making a more lighthearted project. Census data were single male households and couples households.
For my intro to cartography class, @pinakographos.bsky.social did a "Bob Ross Day" where they made a map live. It was invaluable to see how an expert approached the mapmaking process. I am teaching the intro cart class at PSU this year and did the same thing. My students and I had a blast ๐ (1/2)
Glad to see more people talking about trust and maps...
Officially making the transition to this app ๐
