Just being cool by being yourself

I know I’m old, but I miss that time in 1991 when this was as cool as you could look, dress and be.

On this day in 1982, R.E.M. played Clutch Cargos in Detroit, Michigan. “Four people showed up," said Peter. "We took all four of them to a Greek restaurant [afterwards].” In 2015, Mike told me it was “maybe eight” people in attendance, and that the restaurant was called Greektown.

On this day in 1980, the band played its first gig as R.E.M.,
at the 11.11 Koffee Club on West Clayton Street.
On this day 30 years ago, after completing its obligation to I.R.S., R.E.M. signed a five-album deal with Warner Bros., reportedly worth $10 million. “Well, goddamn, don’t you get a raise when you work somewhere for five years?” inquired Mike.
🎶
Storm into the boardroom of the conquering elite
Did you recognize the madman who is shouting in the streets?
Destroy the things that I don't understand
Destroy the things that I don't understand
🎶
Strength and courage overrides
the privileged and weary eyes
of river poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way.

I had no idea that my teenage dream of becoming a touring musician with a guitar around my neck would become an enduring reality!
My latest tour update is on Substack: robynhitchcock.substack.com/p/the-journa...
Recorded on this day 30 years ago.
In The Rock 4/19/1980: The newly named R.E.M. perform their first concert as R.E.M. at the 11:11 Koffee Club in Athens, GA to an audience of 150 people. According to Bertis Downs, who was in attendance, “the crowd estimate was a bit generous” but the songs were “..short, fast and rocking”.
Let it Be was recorded in 1984, becoming a folk/punk/college/rock classic.
It's one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 1980's.
Check out I Will Dare, featuring a guitar solo by R.E.M.'s Peter Buck.

With all the (legit) excitement around the shows, I just want to make sure you see the awesome new video for "The Power Out Song" we released Thursday!! Directed by Dominique Stringfellow and starring Aden!

🔨 🔥 The time to rise has been engaged…
“Finest Worksong” was released as a single in the UK on April 18, 1988. The video was directed by our very own @michaelstipe.bsky.social
I have the bootleg of the first REM show I went to, Pageantry at the Universal Amphitheater. Michael tells the story of Brivs Mekis (I think that was his name) and the book. I always think of the start "Man had a house, he built a wall down the middle of it..."
A birdy and a hand for life's rich demand...
More of Jesus Christ.. 😉
I have always enjoyed Low
Dusk is dawn is day
Where did it go
I've been laughing
Fast and slow
I'll be clumsy instead
haha, yes exactly! Choose your own REMventure lol.
In which We Walk imaginarily has these timeless elemental lyrics about walking through the world, up its stairs, through its woods - and for me (unlike most REM fans) making We Walk one of my all time fave REM songs. : )
as the sun comes up, as the moon
goes down
these heavy notions creep around
it makes me think
long ago I was brought into
this life a little lamb
a little lamb
courageous, stumbling
fearless was my middle name.
but somewhere there I
lost my way

And remember: there are no R.E.M. lyrics- they are what we want them to be !
Fantastic, thank you.
Over time, I invented my own words filling in the blanks - as so many of us have for REM songs, especially for that well titled Murmur album.
I've thought parts of it were more universal like "Up the stairs and to the land ... we walk through the World" : )
This, along with Nightswimming, always brings a lump to my throat.
