Tech billionaires saying UBI is coming is hilarious because c’mon, how have they acted the last 5 years in response to the prospect of higher taxes on the rich and corporations to fund social programs?

That's not to say Mythos isn't impressive--it is--or that there aren't new and important changes in software development and cybersecurity that'll come from models, including very large models and ones tuned for cybersecurity specifically.

Just that the sky didnt fall then. It won't fall now either

I'd put serious money on Address Sanitizer finding at least an order of magnitude more cybersecurity defects--probably two or three orders of magnitude more--and in a larger range of programs, and at a time when software had worse hygiene overall and updated less frequently, than Mythos will.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.

This is actually really surprising (and good).

It's so funny to me that right-wingers love to pretend to love the Middle Ages and the Crusades and all that and then complain that the Pope shouldn't get involved in politics.

Wat maakte George Orwell in 1984 zo optimistisch over de toekomst? De klassieke roman 1984 van George Orwell heeft door de jaren heen veel faam vergaard vanwege de voorspellende waarde die het boek zou hebben.

Part of the answer is wind, and part of the answer is clean baseload, but the thing is that if you want clean baseload you're going to have to pay for it to exist, even when the solar + batteries is available for much less money... most of the time.

This is why net zero is much harder than a 90% reduction in carbon emissions, and we're not sure how to do it. We should do the first 90%! But the challenges beyond that are significant and I wish I could explain this better.

Lots of questions and muddled thinking about whether the impending fossil fuel crisis will benefit coal. Key thing to understand: Fossil fuel demand will fall; fuel-switching between coal and gas is temporary, while clean energy acceleration is structural. Just look at the 2021-2022 gas crisis.

Not one word about clearing strait of Hormuz from sea mines with European mine hunters (Europe has over 90, USA just 4). Not one word on being a backstop for insurance companies to get ships sailing. Not one word to deploy naval escorts.

If only there had been some sort of previous, I dunno, "tanker war" in the region that might have warned us about this?

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately those who do remember it are apparently doomed to watch the nobs in the first cohort do it even after the warning…

We stand before an opportunity.

Europe can step onto the global stage united and strong, or resign ourselves to the sidelines.

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill in June 1940, this may not be Europe’s finest hour, but it is Europe’s hour of decision.

It's crazy how reliant the world's entire energy system is on one body of water, the Strait of Hormuz, just 20 nautical miles across at its narrowest, and situated in one of the most volatile regions on Earth. Here are the countries most dependent on oil&gas through the strait.

Na een uurtje handelen staat de gasprijs ‘front month’ op een plus van 25%. Gisteren ook al 35% erbij. De krappe voorraden spelen een belangrijke rol.
