What’s fluency and why is it important? Should you use extracts or full texts? How do you approach a class discussion about a book?
Hear @suchmo83.bsky.social’s wise insights on these questions and many more, and share with anyone who cares about getting kids reading.

Well done to Schools Week for digging in to what might look like a technical issue, but in reality will be what makes this framework fall apart.
Schools Week have devised a quiz!
Higher or Lower! Can you spot which statement in the Ofsted framework is for the higher grade?!

My new book, Primary Reading Simplified, is released this Monday.
Briefly, I'd like to explain why it exists, who I think will find it useful and where you can find it.

If you’re interested in how we develop expert teachers through professsional development at @reachschools.bsky.social, take a look at the documentary and have a read of this thread about the power of practice, the importance of habits & repeated rehearsal 🗝️
A huge shout out to @pepsmccrea.bsky.social & the @steplab.bsky.social team for sharing this incredible work so generously 🤩
These lessons and the break down of expert teaching will be so valuable for all of us working in teacher development.
They’re making the implicit, explicit 🎁
Huge hat tip to @harpreetkdh.bsky.social, @islaiago.bsky.social, Eve & Tilly for being the absolute stars of the show 👑
They are hands down some of the best teachers in the country. I’ve learnt so much from working with them over the last three years and I’m sure you will too 👏

There’s been lots written about habits, practice & motivation - and we know that research needs to be delivered in a way that is context specific.
That’s why our professional development curriculum is carefully designed to maximise the chances of improving teaching.
As you can see from the video in the first tweet on this thread from Reach Academy Feltham, practice is focussed and feedback is key.
Below is another short clip of trainees from @reachteachtrain.bsky.social practicing and getting feedback.
👑Practice + Feedback👑
And we know that the aviation industry ✈️ and 🩺 medical professionals systematically review and learn from their performance.
So why not teachers too?
We know that elite sportspeople practice isolated skills on conditions that are nothing like the match they will play 🎾
We know actors rehearse scenes, lines of dialogue, and blocking on a stage on their own and with their fellow performers 🎭
So if forming habits and breaking habits is so difficult, but also so important - how do we do it?
At Reach Schools, we embrace the power of practice: focussing on individual skills in isolation and within an artificial environment to help us refine what excellent looks like.
👩🏫When you have to think about the needs of 30 children in a class, or the various 🩻medical conditions, and all the other details 🗒️📊, there is a lot to hold in a teacher’s brain 🧠
That’s why we need habits - making the mechanics of teaching possible.
🗓️Only 12% of people each year achieve their New Year’s Resolution.
❤️Less than 10% of people change their lifestyle after a coronary event.
Habits are hard to build and habits are hard to break.
Think of a parent teaching their child to brunch their teeth 🦷 or a footballer playing a pass ⚽️
Forming the habits that make these things automatic requires deep thought and conscious practice.
And it’s not easy.
Habits - those unconscious actions that run so much of our lives - are an important part of teaching.
We can build habits through conscious deliberate practice, and refine these over time with feedback 🔁
🚘Think of learning to drive or 🚴 ride a bike.
At Reach Schools, we believe in the power of practice and the importance of habits.
Habits are hard to break and arguably harder to build.
